Problems with engaging reverse gear-SMG gearbox

I know SMG is probably a complicated dinosaur technology now but I noticed my SMG gearbox occassionally has problems engaging reverse gear. Is this a warning sign of gear box failure? My car is less than 2 years to the end of its useful life but mileage still

When that happens, try engaging 1st gear, then followed by a smooth dog-leg manoeuvre into R.
