re-map ECU vs Pulley

Hi 22. I am running on the same engine as yours.

In any case, even if you wish to do both mods, it would be advisable to do the pulleys first and the ECU later (after all your other mods).

IMO, for our non-valve 4-pot engines, remapping the ECU does not give us the kick as compared to our valvetronics or 6-pot peers. Dollar-for-dollar basis, we are getting lesser boost than the valvetronics and the 6-pots.

The OBIT chip is a piggyback....... Okay, I would have to leave the topic as it is here. There will be plenty of brothers who have experienced the mod eager enough to give you their opinions.......

Cheers

Thanks for your advise, the cost of the pulley is infact $450, do you think it is ok. Did you mod the pulley your pully, this upgrade is it more like switching off aircon kind of power.

Your car is nicely done up and especially like your front lip.

Thanks

$450 labour inclusive? Sounds kinda expensive, if it is for parts only. Should be between $350 to $400.

I did install the pulleys as one of my first mods. It does not increase horsepower overall, but my feel is that it does help distribute crank power in favour of the low-end torque. This was prominent after I had upgraded my wheels from 17" M68s to the heavier 18" PGIIs. With the pulleys, I did not feel like I have experienced a loss of low-end torque.

You can refer to Ryan's article in the Knowledge Base section:

HI, My ride is a E46 318 pre F/L, I was quoted $750 to remap my ecu and $350 for a pulley upgrade by Juzz. Anyone can advise what will be the better upgrade for a 4 pots engine. I think this re-map ECU is diff from Obit chip, anyone here have experience and how diff is from Obit.

Thanks

Thanks for all the advise and looks like for a start, pulley is a must.

Have seen alot of pple here talking about BVO, who will be the best workshop to handle pulley both in term of cost and most important workmanship. BVO or Juzz.

Thanks

i did my pulley at j4c for 350 with installation.its the first step....

Bro, if go to BVO, it's $350 with install w/o pressing for price, cos the pulleykit for 318 non-valve 4cycl is from BVO in the 1st place....

Cheers

I had a 320i. Did the pulleys ( $350 ) and hiop chip ( $750 ) ( 1 month after pulleys) at J4Cars. There was a marked improvement in engine response and torque, especially after the chip.

hehe..750 for a chip is cheap but ...i will go for obit ecu at bvo ..transferable and programmable...more value for $$$ :laughlik: rite???

i did the $750 HiOp remapping at Juzz4cars after the first week i got my car.
they basically juz d/l something from your car, ask you to come back tomolo. then upload back something into your car.
hardly any tuning.
i asked Amos abt what's being done to my car. he just said "i sent your car's ECU mapping to a overseas tuner to tune. now your car shld be much faster."
i was like... :whattheh:

now i have obit on my car...
it's way way better... IMO.

hmmm, putting a piggyback over a remapped ECU is effectively negating the effects of the latter.

Just installed obit yesterday and since the moment it left the workshop, I've been smiling ever since. It certainly has made my car (e39) much a more responsive. I had my pulley done 1 yr ago and love the feel of a lighter pick-up and now I am re-living the feeling again, except this time is at least 2 times better :)

Now must change driving habit, else wife will wonder why I'm always gunning the car and so heavy footed hehehehe.....

I'll tell her it's not my fault but the computer is acting on me.....'

Congrats Sinner 108. Do keep us posted on the progress of your OBIT e.g. whether you need to go back and retune, whether fuel consumption goes up etc yah. Tx.

wat is the price for OBit? pls PM if appropriate, thanks :)

T6, Thanks!

So far so good interms of response. However, there seems to be some trade off in fuel consumption, need to monitor for a few more days to confirm. As for re-tuning, I have been assured by Bernard that if I need re-tune, I can go back anytime, after I mod other things such as exhaust, CAI, which he can re-tune to optimise the performance further.

Maybe I am gunning it more often now, because, when overtaking, the tendancy is to press a lot harder on the throttle, but with Obit, less effort required now, hence when I applied the same pressure, the rev goes up a lot more quickly and downshift kicks in earlier and the car is basically more eager / lively, so I think consumption is bound to go up.

I am resetting my consumption monitor to track if it goes up significantly and report in the next week cos I have a business trip to go away Thurs till Sat (so no chance to drive the baby :( )
