Red airbag warning

Just got a red airbag warning light when i started my car today. It just came on out of the blue. Need help. Will appreciate if you guys can give me a rough estimate on the damage if i was to bring it into workshop for a look.

Btw, its 1999 E 39

It's most likely one of the airbags is faulty, bring it down to PML and let them check which one/ones. They would probably charge you ard $50 just for checking. Then you would have to make the decision whether to spend couple hundreds to replace the faulty airbag, or live with the red warning light.

just reset it with a scantool first, then see if the problem comes back.

this is the Step 1 no-cost troubleshooting process i will go through first. it could jsut be a faulty sensor.

I think BVO can do it. Not sure how much they'd charge for such a service.

bro, it all depends on the fault. i have had the connection wire on the steering column break before and that costed $30 to replace. if the fault is in the bag or controller then 4 figure bill is possible.
prep for worse hope for best.

whatever the case i recommend to fix cos it can save your life.

thanks you all for the information. Will take it down to BVO for them to reset the system to see if it just a glitch. If the red warning do pops up again, then i will prob do the nececcary repairs.

hi. i came across this thread and would like to find out from anyone here if my airbag warning light stay on occasionally when starting the car. after 30 seconds or so, it went off by it self.

is this a airbag problem? i had a fellow seasoned bimmer friend who said it is not a problem. would appreciate a second opinion. thanks.

Hi there!

I had the same problem with mine (E39 2002 model) as well, quite a common occurance with the E39. Brought it in to PML, they reset it FOC (out of warranty period) then 2 weeks later it came on, ignored it for about 2 months then one fine day it the lights went off and stayed off since.

Seems that Mercedes Benz and BMW are prone to this nuisance false-alarm on the SRS air-bag. My experience is that you can go in and out of PML, but the matter will still not be resolved. That fcuking SRS alarm will keep coming on an bug you in your nightmares.

Hahaha. You said it man. I won't even give a 2 out of 10 for their electronics reliability any how. Very prone to false alarms. Workshop even suggested to me to disconnect the alarm - cos try as they might, they still couldn't get rid of the false alarm.

But would then it not defeat the purpose of having the alarm in the first place?
It begs many other questions .....

it happened to my e90 last week... sent it back to pml, and they just remapped da ECU for me..
happened to my dad S-class as well.. fault-unknown.. haha.. gd luck..
