Removing Radiator Fan for E36

Has anyone tried to remove the engine clutch fan for E36 and replace it with an electric one?

I am thinking of removing both the clutch fan and the electric fan (located at the front) and replace it with a single electric fan instead. The reason for removing the electric fan is that I find it having too much resistance and the fan shroud is covering a large part of the radiator (causing obstruction to air flow, esp. at high speeds on the expressway).

I did read about DIY fan delete mods and where I could get those parts locally (esp. thermostat and new fan).

Thanks!

Re: Removing Radiator Fan for E36

the fan shroud is there to direct air flow, it doesnt restrict it. The electric fan is for the air con

putting a thrno fan is relatively simple, but removing your old fan is a pain in the ass. Need a special tool

Re: Removing Radiator Fan for E36

dont need a special tool, just remove the fan shroud and you gain access to the fan clutch. The fan clutch is threaded in the opposite direction so to loosen it you need to turn clockwise. Just give it a good initial yank and it will come out. At least for the E36 this is the case

I think the 6 cylinder its bloody hard to do with a regular spanner. Not enough space

Re: Removing Radiator Fan for E36

for a 4 cylinder, some of us did it to squeeze a few hp out. Just need to find milk15 to get the electric fan and a mech to install. :yummie:

Sorry, I meant the aircon electric fan. If you look thru the kidney grills, you will notice that the areas surrounding the aircon fan is covered by plastic covers. I feel these covers just restrict air flow only. Thus I am thinking of removing the fan together with are those plastic covers.

Instead of having both the clutch and the electric fan, I will just mount a single electric fan at the back of the engine radiator. This will allow me to cool both the aircon and engine radiator at the same time.

I will also be able to expose the entire aircon radiator to the incoming air w/o any plastic stuffs blocking. Hopefully, this will reduce temp and also reduce a bit of weight.

IMHO the fan delete mod is kinda dagerous for the amount of gains obtained. If we were in a less tropical country with little jams I would be ok with it, but not in SG. Remember that an electric fan would not be able to turn with as much torque as a clutch fan.

Possible. However, most cars today are running fine with just 1 electric fan. Thus I don't see why can't our E36 do the same thing.

+1 look for milk settle, the mechanic took out my fan & went for a spin , damn it, the car more responsive! so electric fan which do not draw engine power much is a must to change. E36 very easy some electric wiring only.

How much do you charge for removing the fan? If can, I come look for you this evening!

Dun listen to him la..... that day iScoupe was here to install the Unichip.... So my tuner suggested to him to use electric fan instead of engine fan....

Tuner : " Jackie ah, car still not fast enough?"
iScoupe : " Ok nia ley.... Fast la.. but still cannot win Silvia S15 ley..."
Tuner : " Ai take out ur Engine fan mai? Confirmed better... as ur engine fan are drawing out power from it...."
iScoupe : "Ai ah.. Ai ah.. mai tu liao.....but take out liao how?? Can fix electric fan for me?"
Tuner : " Install go ask BVO install for you la.... but need find the electric fan, dunno still got stock anot....."
iScoupe : " Nvr mind la... dun install.. leave it w/o fan la.... engine tio burnt then got excuse change M3 engine ma...."

End of it all........ took out and test drive w/o fan.... come back wanted the electric fan... but too bad no stock....... :laughlik: :laughlik:

Re: Removing Radiator Fan for E36

ya furton.sim i mean change electric fan is a norm for E36, i suppose dismantle & install electric fan with BVO but Guni no stock... the tuner did remove the fan for me to spin & it feels good so i ask BVO, they say u find a fan i install for u with minimum electrical mod.
sorry to mislead u.

ya guni btw sorry JOe is not a mechanic is a tuner muhahahaha...
yaya & fook ur S15, very fast mei.....

Re: Removing Radiator Fan for E36

look for ur home wall mounted fan... also electric and can have 3 different speeds too
hahahaha.....
