Replace steering column?! (of E90)

Brought my car for servicing and besides the usual change of engine oil and brake fluids, mentioned some of the problems which have been coming up for them to look into it...

1. Steering wheel often locks when trying to start the car (sometimes orange sign, recently red sigh comes out)

2. Had to topup 2 litres of engine oil in a 1.5 year period.

3. Relatively high consumption for a 323 (6+ km/l )

4. Sometimes car feels like its vibrating/shivering at traffic light when my foot is on the brakes.

Below were the explanations/solutions given to me:
1. They tested and steering angle/sensor sthg wrong... Reprogrammed, took car for test drive, red sign still comes on??? Next, will be replacing the steering column and reprog as well.........

2. This is a new engine, very hot so engine oil evaporated etc etc... so as long as its not more than 2litres its ok...

3. Consumption is normal for this car?...

4. Tested with their computers and found nothing wrong...

Anyone with the same problems and any comments on the above?

i had the same steering lock issue sometime back,, send back to pml, and they told me nothing was wrong :juggle: .

I did nothing to rectify it since then, and its been a while since i experience the problem..... :screwedu:

Are you still having the same problem? And what colour is the sign?
I just sort of found it irritating everytime i started the car and had to remove the key and move the steering wheel couple of times before it worked...

not having this problem for abt 2-3 mths..
i didnt get the red sign.. only the yellow

hey, i have the same problem - see my thread "Start Problem". Seems that this is a common problem for the E90.
only difference is i see the yellow sign.
They re-programmed my car yesterday - and so far no problems (hopefully!).

The SE advised that if the same problem occurs, then the steering column sensor needs to be replaced.

Are you still having the same problem? And what colour is the sign?
I just sort of found it irritating everytime i started the car and had to remove the key and move the steering wheel couple of times before it worked...

My LCI 523i got similiar problem. Steering angle sensor changed 2 times already! Sometimes still getting the error now.

they re-prog mine today and said they took it for test drive still same thing... so will replace steering column... maybe its just the sensor then... hope its not too major a problem...gave me such a scare...

:shock: huh!!! oh no... which centre do u go?

Wah Violet... something is seriously wrong with your car...
the FC is atrocious... unless you do 100% city driving and constant high rev... its quite impossible to reach such figures. My E90 325 is giving me 9km/L and i do occasional hard rev .

For the engine oil part, the N52 do consume abit of engine oil, but again yours is on the high side... mine's about 1L in 2yrs.

As the steering... mine's vibration when starting up early morning... nothing done yet
