Reserve fuel tank capacity

Hi All,

Have been wondering if the manual says Fuel tank is 63 L and reserve tank is 8 L, does this mean that in TOTAL I have 71 L of petrol? or just 63 L?

TIA

Re: Reserve fuel tank capacity

just 63L, if you're driving a 3ser.

Correct me if I am wrong but I beg to differ.

I frequently leave my tank till its almost dry before filling up. On several occassions at the gas station, I notice that the amount of fuel entering my tank is above 56 L's. Assuming that your theory is correct and 63L full tank is inclusive of the 8L reserve, I would have triggered the reserve at round about 55 L. This does not make sense as my fuel gauge needle has another 2 blocks to go on the fuel meter at 55L. Why would I need to be told that I have tapped into my reserve tank when it is clearly shown on my fuel gauge that I have not bottom out yet?

Re: Reserve fuel tank capacity

go read your driver's manual.

written by BMW, not by me...

Re: Reserve fuel tank capacity

Germans are not very good at expressing what they want to say in English..;)

Re: Reserve fuel tank capacity

would hardly call it a reserve fuel tank then. It is nothing more than an indication that fuel is low.

Re: Reserve fuel tank capacity

in fact, there is nothing in the manual that calls it a reserve tank - it's just a 'low on fuel' indicator.

by the time the indicator light comes on, you'd better be on your way to the petrol station. cos is you are really low on fuel, even up and down ramps, slightly more aggressive cornering, etc. might result in the remaining fuel sloshing around in the tank, and not going into the fuel line.

what damage? your cats might screw up. and that's expensive...

Bro ,this is the 1st time i read such info that not enough fuel will affect the CAT..
pls enlighten us how it affect..wish to know more.:)

Re: Reserve fuel tank capacity

In vehicles equipped with catalytic converters, a situation can occur wherein the catalytic converter can become defective by running the vehicle until the tank is completely empty. When the tank becomes empty, the fuel pump sporadically pumps vapor instead of liquid. The necessary metering of fuel to one or more cylinders of the engine of the motor vehicle can then drop so greatly that combustion misfires occur. The uncombusted fuel is then subsequently combusted together with oxygen in the catalytic converter whereby the temperature of the catalytic converter increases. The temperature increase can be so significant that the catalytic converter becomes permanently damaged (it melts).

well said, Bro! :cloud9:

u r some kinda of techkie freak to me..
is abv more of assumption with theory or wat?

to me, when fuel low (light on n show mileage minus "-" km) guess yr car still has that so call spare "tank" feature comes in, which probably has "8 litres"
in my E60 case, i top up usually light on, mileage 0~10km level, abt 66 L, and spec say my E60 is 70 L tank.
so from here, I m technically (binded by spec to follow) allow up to 4 L max.
But in my experience, in Jap cars, when light on, I travel up to 80km...
so in all aspect of tech design, there shld be a safety factor of 1.5 times
that means I m thinking of 70 L is spec-in but actually car can run til flat at 55 + 15x1.5= 77L max rule.. b4 yr car "die" off
just my opinion

Re: Reserve fuel tank capacity

would like to claim credit, but unfortunately, the above is part of a document given to insurance companies to protect them from fraudulent claims of damaged or malfunctioning cat convertors.

is it true? i dunno, but more than a few people have told me that running out of fuel will damage your cats. they say we shouldn't believe everything we get off the internet, but it certainly makes sense to me...

'fuel' for thought - a near empty tank is also more prone to fuel surge, so it doesn't have to be completely empty (to cause damage).
