S2000

Re: S2000

I lived with an AP1 for 2 years, though it was registered in 2002, it was the last of the AP1s with the tail happy set-up (donut is easy), but the 9300 rev is what you look forward to with the top down and after a hard day work, pretty intoxicating.

I can get a Nike stand bag into the boot without having to remove my driver, so that's no bad at all. The boot is quite deep, so can still get a duffel bag for your shoes and change etc, and just enough space for a laptop bag in the boot. The canvas top does not intrude into the boot as it is stored behind the seats since it is a 2 seat roadster.

Maintenance was hardly anything, and being honda extremely reliable. Only had clutch pump failure, but that's probably contributed by me because of uprated clutch. Too heavy for stock pump to cope.

Had a set of KW variant 3 slotted in, and that tame the rear end quite a fair bit.

Unfortunately I had to sell it as I relocate to Aust for short term, but it has amazing resale since it was a kah motor's car, and because it is rare. I hear the new owner crashed it quite bad 3 weeks after taking over from me, and there was talk that the car be totalled. Not sure what happen after that.

since Honda's F20C time, there are several developments in engine tech which enable them to make the engine cheaper. Coating tech, materials tech, all changed. They will have to change too, I guess.

Actually material and coating tech in engines has been evolving very slowly. What's applied in new engines has always been around for many years, decades even. It is only a matter of what the manufacturers choose to incorporate - influenced mainly by cost. Also they are only adopted when absolutely necessary, to reach performance and longevity targets. It is common that larger displacement engines that are less stressed than their smaller counterparts. The F20C components are already designed for very high stress operation. If the the new components (block and crank) are strong and stiff, then an equivalent 4L V8 will put out right around 480 hp.

The biggest differences between a standard engine and a sporty engine is mainly in lower end geometry (sets max. possible valve area) and upper end port design. After that comes materials and beyond good materials the costs get crazy. You may pay 100% more going from standard to good materials and forming processes. Going from good to great may be another 400% with relaitvely little performance or longevity increase. The F20C components are already in the good tier and unless the new engine is to run at higher engine speeds NA, there is no strong motivation (from a corporate profit view) to change much if anything. Marketing maybe... like titanium rods that really aren't required for performance or worth it in automotive applications except in F1 and 1 or 2 race classes outside of it.

Not sure abt AP1 but AP2 benefits from a better final drive conversion. Power delivery seems more urgent with the new final drive even without rev cut. It feels closer to a stock Evo in terms of acceleration. With original final drive, the acceleration is more pedestrian.

To me, the downside is that the S2k looks a bit dated. It would definitely benefit from some aftermarket bodykits.

Guess the s2k represented the best of what Honda could offer to the world before the millenium.......the world has since moved on, even family sedans are putting out 200+bhps.

But just like the dc2, and subsequent Rs, the s2k allows you the driver, to extract power from the last 250th horse with such ease and balance.....something that many manufacturers have yet managed to do, that makes the s2k special

.......and while doing it, it screams and communicates with such intensity!!!.....so close to aural (axl....not oral hor) nirwana!! :nehnehhh:
