You would have loved that taxi ride I am sure. Gerald has absolutely amazing car control. The guy walks on water too I think...

Mate, it aint that the car is sticking to the ground... if you watch him, Gerald is putting a ton of input into the car to make it feel like its going on rails. Its his freaking driving mate.

Roger that Nigel. I heard it adds another 23hp as well :). Will be doing it sometime but just wanna keep it looking understated for the moment.

There's no denying Gerald is a good and experienced driver, but come on mate :D if Nigel feels stick, then unless we can confirm or deny stick, then we should leave it at that. For what it's worth, Nigel is correct at least in some way. See plot below. 4 drivers, same model of car (S2000), different tire and suspension, but mainly it is the tire (street to mixed semi to semi to slick). One of them is Gerald below, the other 3 are good drivers but nameless and faceless - though all near the top in times for their class of tire.

This is the whole of T5, lateral acceleration scale from 0.9 - 1.3. Look at mid corner T5 which is as near steady state as you can get as a driver.. low no input, hence the smoothness of the plot. Tires, coilovers, a lower weight car, very aggressive alignment.. it's not all for nothing.

Guess which plot belongs to which tire and which tire puts which driver on top heheheh. Look at the difference the tire alone makes.

BTW, need to borrow your place and game console for an hour sometime. Chris wants visualization of a concept in the virtual world before his next trackday hahahh. It also applies to Mitsughinis so maybe you can benefit from it :D

This can't get any funnier! It's great to join this track day, and finally meet up with people like Ryan Chua, Brad, etc., fellow Z4 M owners.

Thank you everyone.

Guessing mine is the purple line? I am on old semis. If I can find some money somewhere then i can put new tires on for a Time attack lap! haha

Driving is about seat time and being positive and confident with your inputs to thread the limits of the physics. The person who has the ability to find the limit and stay within the limit on the day wins the race (all else constant - which never is the case) haha

Just like using 4 data from 4 different drivers although same car just different tires, many other factors come into play like the condition of the track. Is the session recored post F1/Moto GP where the track has a lot more rubber at the apexes which will give in my experience about 0.5-0.7s? New/old tires? How many heat cycles etc all play a part. There are too many factors already.

What I think is more valuable is to understand what you are doing and how to maximize your own lap times. Try out various linings, braking points and throttle points and see which yields the best results which = seat time. haha and seat time = $$ !!!

Re: SIC Track Day - 7th May 2011 Pictures

hahah yeah purple is you

I was there at the other trackdays too and they were all ballpark hot and clean not heavily rubbered in. It is also possible to look at data and get a feel for how grippy the track surface is if you have a driver that always brakes at the limit in at least a couple spots, and a tire baseline.

The illustration is only to show more stick vs less stick in quantities with 4 across the range. In the same car back to back, Schumacher on street tires vs a good enthusiast driver on slicks, Schumacher will be hard pressed to find 8-9 seconds to emerge quicker. Just like car for car, among good enthusiasts, the spread is around say 1 sec. It's just physics. Class for class and anything beyond with basics sorted, there are no magic drivers that finds 8 -9 sec purely through driving on an approx 2:30 lap.. approx 5-6%. The most common differences in temp, track surface, may result in a tenth of a G, which is small compared to the 3 tenths gained going from street to semi, or the further 3 going from semi to race slick.

Porsche Cup class A or MME qualifying... the spread between the imported Porsche ultra specialists vs the gentleman team owner is closer to 1-2 sec than it is 8 - 9 sec. It is very difficult to overcome tire differences cos they are enormous.

Most of everything done to cars in search of laptime come down to grip, so in fact all who modify with the aim to go faster are chasing grip. There are definite and big differences in grip between classes of car and tire.

yeah man tell me about it... $$$ :( hahah

Cheers
