Stone chip in windscreen

Hi

Just got a stone chip on my windscreenyesterday afternoon on CTE. Dunno where it came from... I was only travelling around 80-90km/hr and suddenly, big loud PIAK!. Looks around and found a round (size of a 5 cent coin) in the middle of my windscreen

I checked my car insurance and it says that it has unlimited coverage on windscreen. Should I just go to PML and get it replaced and claim from insurance? Will I lose my NCB and will my premium be higher next renewal?

Or should I live with it?

Is replacing the windscreen a straight forward process where it's not going to take more than one day to do?

any advise or experience is appreciated? Thanks in advance

Mike

Re: Stone chip in windscreen

alternatively u could get the chip repaired. quite a few mobile guys do it these days. it only works if the chip is not too serious.

Re: Stone chip in windscreen

You should not lose your NCB if you claim windscreen insurance. Only catch is that if you sell your car and terminate your insurance prematurely, you may not be able to get a refund on your premiums, so you just weigh the costs and see which is more beneficial. This is my understanding for AXA, not sure if other policies differ, best to call and do a check.

If they have stock, replacement should not take more than a couple of hours for outside workshops. If you go back PML, I dunno coz I have never ever stepped in there.

Re: Stone chip in windscreen

Just called PML and they confirmed that my insurance covers it and will not affect my NCB. The only problem is its going to take 2 days to do.

Slater, regarding your suggestion on mobile repairers, do they ever get it 100% repaired. that means I will not see any defects.

pros n cons abt repairing whole windscreen:
pros
a) get new screen
b) ???

cons:
a) yr car 2 days in PML?
b) no alternate transport provided by PML?
c) MOST IMPORTANT - LEAKAGE HAPPEN AFTER 3 MTHS of installation...
if done well on sealing, thats fine. If not, 1~2 yrs later, or sometimes 1 mth later, when heavy rain, u see some water seeping thru or yr carpet is wet, n u start wondering what went wrong...

but then again, it depends if u r on hard luck or not..suay or heng lor

if damage looks minute, can repair at less than $50~ then I think I will go for simple spot repair as against whole screen change.

Point (c) in cons concerns me. Any bros out there could give a true account that this had happened before from PML?

My 2 cents worth.

My friend changed his windscreen and had this leaking problem afterwards. The risk is that anyone other than the original factory, may not be able to do a proper job. FYI my friend had to sell his car off to resolve this problem.

If not severe, suggest you just patch it instead.

oh u may choose to wait til something serious happen to yr windscreen like this pic shows..

this guy was just doing simple cleaning in his car dash, and he is so strong that his shoulder hit the rear view mirror n the whole chunk of glass (of windscreen) also came off !!!:errr:

if something this serious, then better claim insurance...

Re: Stone chip in windscreen

Hi Mike,

I just had my chipped windscreen replaced at PML under insurance coverage 3 months ago because the chip grew into a long horizontal crack and was growing with time. Took just a day and only cost to me was to replace the VKool film for $238 after i was sure there was nothng wrong with the replacement glass. My thinking is it's best to replace in case the crack/chip grow.

Re: Stone chip in windscreen

If you have a serious chipped wind screen, please change it. you do not know how much pressure is exerted on the windscreen on higher speed. you dont want the wind screen to suddenly shatter when you are enjoying your highspeed cruise in the NS highway do you?

since it is free get it done.
after the windscreen is changed, for a day or two, do not close the door with all the windows up as it exerts pressure and may cause the the glue to detac and then water may leak.

I have changed mine 2ice, no issues , though i did not do it at PML,

interesting - this is something i was always concerned about in the event i had to change my windscreen.

Re: Stone chip in windscreen

Hi,
On my former car, I got my windscreen changed every year for at least 5 years in a row. Usually got them along NS. NCD is not affected. Changed at PML and most importantly, ask them to change to new rubber seal too. I know PML will change them as per SOP BUT not sure about outside workshop.

If they re-use rubber seal, then chances that there will be leak due to defect at seal while removing the broken windscreen.

This is my thought.
