Stone Chips

Hi Guys,

Been noticing some stone chips on my bonet and bumper. Though there are quite tiny, the frequency in which I am getting new chips are quite regular and its starting to worry me. I rarely travel on dirty, gravel filled roads and I try as much as possible to avoid tailgating heavy duty construction vehicles, but the stone chips just keep coming!

Was wondering if you guys have similiar problems and how do you protect or prevent against something like that.

Thanks.

Re: Stone Chips

Re: Stone Chips

i have 3M clear bra on the front bumper & 1/3 of the hood. so far it works flawlessly.

+1,000,000. I only protected my windscreen and headlights. I didnt both putting on bra for the hood and bumper. Its cheaper to repaint it than use the bra. For items such as windscreen and headlight, the cost of replacement is far too expensive to compromise. Hence, the protection. Anyway I think stone chips on the bumpers and hood is nothing too serious. Hell in fact it looks like battle scars. Its cool! Think of it as men having scars on their face whilst turning quite a few women on. :lol2:

Re: Stone Chips

i didnt hv any protection on.. just send it for respray if the conditions are too bad

How much is the bra coating for bumper and hood? Guess if it is too expensive, it might be worth spraying the entire area when it gets too serious as Omar suggested.

did it in KL. Cost ~ RM2500. Clear bra is good in the sense that you do not worry about color mismatch after lousy spray job. Some ppl prefer to retain factory paint.:cloud9:

Having said that, i had my hood painted after clear bra too due to big flying object!:yummie:

Re: Stone Chips

Guess I will just wait it out. Meanwhile just try and avoid gravel filled roads.

Can't help but notice that stone chips are more prevalent on my bimmer as suppose to previous cars owned. Is it just the increase in heavy construction vehicles on the road or are bimmer paint jobs not as good?

hiadee, what till u go up north n follow behind some tour buses n trucks that go at 130kmh and drives like some Ah Seng and then u will hv a diff opinion about stones n what not flying. Why u so scared on chipping? Pay so much for a car to drive, so just drive it !!!

there have been some extensive discussions on the E90post.com about E90s that attract pebbles/stones due to the aero dynamics design...go check it out!

err hmm my car is black too. I wash/detail it every 3 days. I had chips on the front bumper, kidney grill, fog lights, etc. U will definitely have this once u cheong on NSH. On my sedan, once my windscreen cracked when the truck in front flung a stone. so loud I thot someone fired a shotgun at me. ....as Omar said looks very macho...like war veteran scars n some macho celebrities car.......babe magnet.

So leave the chip marks alone...its an art piece:)

i think its our roads getting worse. if it's not gravel lying all over the roads, some truck managed to scrape up holes in the ground.

recession lasts longer, govt will do more roadworks/construction and our cars kena more flying stones. jialat.

Re: Stone Chips

got 1 prominent stonechip along ECP near casino...damn sway!

anyone here chased down these damn truck drivers and demand compensation if it was clearly from the load these m*****F**K**s carried?

Re: Stone Chips

I just got my new bm a week, and while driving along TPE to SLE, this fully laden truck with sand was travelling at - least 70 km, and travelled along lane 2! I was closing in at around 200 metres and these particles of sand "flying" towards my car.. can even hear the sound of it hitting my ride...

Luckily, I had an opportunity to go to Lane 1, yet, at lane one, still got plumetted with sand! I had no choice sped away... There may be sone "pitting" but can be polished!

So irresponsible, some more... driving on Lane 2! At least it should have kept to Lane 3 and travelled at slower speeds.. not too bad.. sucks! big time!

Re: Stone Chips

When I got my 4-year old car (2nd hand), there was no stone chip at all. Impressive ex-owner.

After 1 week of driving it, I ganna a stone chip on bonnet. Heart pain. At night hug pillow, cry until eyes swollen next morning.

Now, after 1.5 year, there are chips on the bonnet, wind screen, lights cover. Some say look like Gemini, some say look like Virgo.

Can treat it like lost relationship. It's painful in the beginning, but it will fade. Alternatively, treat it like battle scar. People see the car and think: "Wah, this car very hiong, don't play with the driver...."

Re: Stone Chips

Stone chips can't be help la..unless you guys wanna be like adnsx ...abit abit go spray bumper :nehnehhh:

Re: Stone Chips

car bra is a waste of money n time
it looks ugly after awhile..turns yellow/murky color n shitt like that....
some chips are acceptable these days IMO.....if want to be perfect, the car need not leave the house..

i protect my headlights usually with some clear film but ensure it can sustain some heat from the beam. Windscreen wise,...well we can get a "free" one every year can't we from insurer? maybe pay a bit
