Sun Protection Glazing

Anybody has optioned in Sun Protection Glazing for their 3 series? How effective is it compared to aftermarket solar film.

Searched, seems that the sun protection glass is only for rear windows and rear screen and not the front. Anyone can clarify?

I am considering getting this option for my ride.

Re: Sun Protection Glazing

its privacy glass / tinted glass from the car manufacturer right?

is that legal? will it meet LTA tinted window requirements?

solar films are better IMHO.... I have seen honda streams, honda crossroads with factory privacy glass go to window tint shops to get films installed.

Yes, I think should be legal because it is one of the options in the order form. Also I saw the 535 on display in PML also has this as the rear windows are darker but front are clear.

I am wondering if they would be much more effective than solar films in our hot climate.

Re: Sun Protection Glazing

I can help you with that - I've had the option ticked on my F13, but I still ended up getting additional solar film tinting from Sherman's Infratint!

Re: Sun Protection Glazing

Its just darker in colours but do not have protection against UV.

Cheers ..

Thanks. So it is merely cosmetic. Then better to go for solar films installation.

In fact, when I brought mine to Infratint, I asked, would it affect the legality (don't want to tint on top of tint). Sherman laughed and said "WHAT BMW TINT? Pui lah, this kind of tint!" :lol2::lol2::lol2:

Re: Sun Protection Glazing

The glass is tinted but no uv / ir rejection abilities.....

Europe this glass works cos they want max amount of heat to come into cabin to warm it up during winter months. Summer months, the europeans, believe in winding down their windows, or open top motoring.....

So you saying the tinted glass will actually make the car hotter in our climate? I don't want the car to be like oven especially in the hot afternoon.

Re: Sun Protection Glazing

The tinted glass is just tinted glass similar to regular glass except it has colour to it.... In this case... Smoke grey. Offers no uv nor ir rejection.....

Best is de-option it and install dark dark solar film with good uv &ir rejection capabilities.

If you option the privacy glass, you have to install clear solar films which offer lesser ir / uv capabilities.... Since the privacy glass tint reading is almost right on the edge of LTA legal boundaries.

Btw, how much for the privacy glass option?

It is listed as option 420: Sun Protection Glazing. Option price about $1300.

So I think I will seriously reconsider this option now.

Re: Sun Protection Glazing

Yup, same price I paid for useless glass. Lesson learnt.

Re: Sun Protection Glazing

Thanks for all the valuable advise. Now I can better decision with all the feedback.

Re: Sun Protection Glazing

$1300 can almost pay for 2 rounds of top grade plat 99 solar films at infratint..... The boss there will say you are his number 1 supporter.
