Hi all.......

I'm driving a E36 bmw 320i. just bought the car about 5 mths ago. this is my first time driving a bmw. I want to find out what is the cause to my problem. When the light is on I will experience a loss of power and I feel like the car is on 3rd gear or something. When i switch off the engine for a few seconds and start again, the light disappears and the car will drive like normal. Pls advice.......thanx.

Oh no... tat warning light is every auto transmission owner's nightmare!

Its either you have over rev a particular gear to rev cut under manual selection or the trany is slipping.

Maybe not enuf trany oil...

Better get it check. Click on "Workshops" on the top right hand corner for workshop details.

Good Luck

another victim... just got my tranny rebuilt...the dreaded light came on..and i drove from sembawang to Tmpines at 20 km/h... dude..i jest u not...go get it checked out...

That would be your tranny going into limp home mode....its suppose to cut off the top gears and allow you to limp home for repairs.

On some newer models...there will be a ting sound when this happen followed by warning on the dashboard.

Ghostrider,

Hi.....

Thanx for the advice. So it seems like i have to spend money afterall!!! hehehe...

Cheers. :|

i oso had this prob just last mth. Whenever the light came on, the gearbox will switch to "safe" mode which will remain in 1 gear. Sent to BVO n its the solenoid dats faulty. Got it changed n change the tranny oil oso. Prob solved after dat. teres a ECU dats controlling the tranny, cheapest option, get the workshop to unplug n plug back the ECU 1st then see if the lights appears again.

teinsports,

thanx for the reply. Must be common problems among bimmers huh? Anyway, how much is the cost to change everything??

Cheers. :|

it cost me close to abt 500bucks just for the solenoid, tranny oil n labour. if its a full overhaul, then it will cost a few grand, like wat the other bro has said.

Guys...if you want to change tranny in JB...I know a workshop there that got recon units. It might be cheaper than SG.

PM me if you are interested. I no mark up one...just helping a friend nia.

(off course I get free bak kut teh when I visit him lah !!)

Re: transmission exclaimation mark light is on.

I think you better get it fixed, my dad's previous E34 520i got the same problem but he hadn't fix it in time(keeps offing the engine until the light disappears), after that the light won't go off until he offs the engine and moves the gear knob up and down repeatedly abt 7 times(dun try this on your car!), the light goes off but the car accelerates very slowly and then jerks at around 1800rpm to go at 'normal' speed. I think he also commented about the consumption getting higher. Just my 2 cents worth..

Hi,
Your AT torque converter is gone. Hence the AT will default at gear 3. It will cause high consumption as your gear will move off at gear3 permanently as gear 1 & 2 is not working. but once attaining cruising speed AT will change to 4th gear (or gear 5 if 5AT) as before.

This happen to my ride before.
Just send in to a AT workshop and they should be able to repair your AT in 4-5 working days.

Re: transmission exclaimation mark light is on.

Hi,

the triangle exclaimation mark came on this afternoon while I was parked at some place, afterwhich it went off afterI switch off the engine and after I have restarted engine again, it no longer is there.

Is this critical problem? Or is it becos I might have accidentally hit the DSC switch...
:(

any one else encountered this b4?

Re: transmission exclaimation mark light is on.

had the same problem with the E36 a week ago, transmission light came on, no power, gear was slow to engage, changing of gears with sudden jerks, basically the works. Brought it in to BVO today, and was given 2 options, either the automatic gear box is gone(which will cost approx SGD3000 to overhaul) or changing of the transmission fluid and see whether it gets better(which cost me SGD293 including labour charges). As you have already guessed, I gladly paid SGD293 and walked away with a big smile. Everything was back to normal and drives beautifully. Aparently the previous owner had the 'bo chap' attitude and couldn't care less about servicing the car. My advise, don't wait for it to get worst or you'll end up paying over 3,000 bucks and those guys at BYO really know what they are doing. They also advice me to change the transmission fluid every 40,000 to 60,000km.

Re: transmission exclaimation mark light is on.

same same problem, just get the transmission topped up. should do the trick...but safest bet is still to change the transmission fluid altogether...293 to change everything, is it cheap??
