Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

Just want to relate my sad story on my face-lifted 630i convertible ...

My wife and I went to Great World City for movie ('Definitely, Maybe' - not as bad as I thought!) and after that and some grocery shopping, we got into my car. I stuck the key in the ignition, stepped on the brake, hit the "Start/Stop engine" button ... and nothing happened. Well, something happened, but it sure wasn't the engine starting ...:furious:

When I stuck the key in the ignition, the usual lights came on (ABS light, airbag light, etc etc) as well as the LCD screen (the iDrive screen), so I thought "surely the battery cannot be dead". In any case, I only took delivery of the car in December '07. Then I took the key out of the ignition and tried the whole "start the car" routine, but this time I noticed that the gear shift made some weird clicking noises. By now, I was saying loudly, "what the shit is happening?" And my wife beside me was asking me what was wrong ... She suggested that I try again by opening and closing the door, locking and then unlocking the car (she was thinking that the alarm system was screwed up), then trying to start the car again. I did as she suggested but nada, nothing, zilch, zippo, zero ...

Then the LCD screen flicked to something I've never seen before and said something along the lines of: "Transmission failure. Please contact your BMW Assist ..." blah blah blah. Then my previous thoughts of "what the shit is happening" turned predictably to "what the f*ck is happening" ...

I pressed the "check" button on the indicator stalk and the data screen (between the rev counter and the sppedometer) had the cheek to tell me "check ok"!!!!! WTF???

I tried a couple more times and the data screen now came up with an exclamation mark!!! And all this time, the gear shift kept clicking from "P" to "R" to "D" and always ending up at "P".

In between all this, my wife had called up BMW Assist and she passed me to a lady whereupon I explained my rather frustrating and failed episode of trying to start the car ... She took down my details and said that she'd call me back in 5min. I tried a couple more times to start the car, but again, nothing except by the grace of God would this thing kick to life ... :furious:

With nothing else to do except sit and sweat in the car, my wife and I adjourned back into the air conditioned comfort of Great World City to await Miss BMW Assist to call. Pretty much bang on 5min later, she called and said that BMW will tow the car to the Kampung Arang workshop as the problem seemed too apocalyptic to fix there and then at the shopping mall car park.

What can I say right? So I said "when is this towing gonna happen?" She pleasantly informed me that the towing dudes would be there in 45-60min (just like the timeline that Starhub gives you right?). And yes, they got there within 45-60min whereupon I cleared the car of my valuables, signed some forms, gave my car key to them and slunk away ...

While waiting though, I sent an sms to my sales rep and complained - I also asked if I'd get a replacement car given that my beloved 630 is only 4 months old and then this shit happens. He called up within 10min of receiving my sms and said that it was now too late to arrange a temp car for me (it was now around 8pm) but that he'd try to arrange something tomorrow... I asked him if this was something that happened frequently to which he replied that this was the first time he'd heard of this happening since the transmission (the SMG box) is new.

What can I say right? Shit happens!!! Guess will update you folks about my travails tomorrow if you're interested ...

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

Damn... that sucks! I am wondering how they tow the car since the carpark is quite steep and narrow in some areas.

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

good luck man...u wont have to pay a single cent... but no car is sucks..

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

Totoseow just enlighten me today tat his 5ser electronic thingy sucks for his ride ! now a 630i , is a disappointment must ask PML to compensate!

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

hope you get that replacement car...

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

Yeah I was wondering about that ... how they get my car and tow it out of the car park? My sales rep said that they are experts at doing this ...

Guess if they f*ck up the car in any manner I will scream and shout until my face turn blue and black ... Fortunately I haven't succumbed to the mod virus otherwise whatever 19" DPE/HPE/Hartge [insert appropriate manufacturer of choice] rims may get scratched or dented.

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

my gear box acted funny after 2 yrs, went into pml and they did some checks and replaced the whole gear box for me.

hope u get some good explanation from PML...good luck and keep us posted.

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

If they are so expert at towing cars out of carparks, that doesn't sound assuring of BMW car quality...

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

the more electronics they hv on the car..the more chances of them screwing up. but these things happen. just like buying handfones...some hv no problems some will have. but look on the bright side....the service came good...be glad.

I agree, in my eyes, BMW did everything they can.

PML has also done their duty as much as possible to assist you out. Chill bro and hope you get a replacement to drive around while they fix up your GB. Shit happens, but hey that's why warranty is around.

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

Maybe I just hold BMW to a higher standard of quality than you ... my mistake I guess. Was thinking of getting a 3 series for my wife but am seriously reconsidering now. Wouldn't you if you were in my shoes? I mean when one pays >$300k for a piece of equipment, one does not expect failure in the first 4 months ... This is German engineering!!! But yeah, my expectations have now been managed down - ok lah what to do?

But yes, I agree that the BMW Assist was very quick to respond and very professional. My sales rep was very apologetic and I didn't get mad 'cos I know at the end of the day, he didn't build my car right. So yeah, shit happens ...

Anyway, the Kg Arang people called me up this morning and said that it looks like my alternator went kaput and my battery is utterly and totally flat ... so it wasn't a transmission fault after all. They ran through the diagnostics today and the car seems to be fine. They needed to keep my car overnight to recharge the battery and then do more tests tomorrow to check there is no leakage of current then hopefully can return the car to me tomorrow.

Oh and no, I didn't have the pleasure of getting a replacement car because all the replacement cars are out on duty because "many people having major servicing" according to the service manager I spoke to.

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

it's pretty weird but true - batteries are kept for months in the warehouse before being installed into the cars, and the cars take a couple of months to come to SG. By the time it comes, the battery is usually half screwed.

Take the opportunity to upgrade the batteries to a better aftermarket one.

Tend to agree with you. For that kind of money, customer has the right to expect a bit more...

Maybe should insist on a new battery as well. Batteries once drained tend to be less reliable and fail earlier, especially if you travel a lot and the car is not driven week(s) at a time.

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

Trust me i had my share of issues with my previous Z4 and current M Coupe (minor issue with GPS), and honestly whether it cost 300k or more...it still is ultimately a car which moves along on four wheels.

When i look at my friends who own 800k ferraris and when they have problems and cost involved even the car is few months old ..haha, i consider myself quite lucky.

Ultimately they should have gotten you a replacement car but luck of the draw sometimes.

What a "coincidence" ;) Someone "just" happened to return a car.

Re: Transmission failure on new 630i!!!

@ Ryan: Haha looks like your expectations had been managed down already whereas mine hadn't!

@ centurion: Good suggestion - will ask my sales rep to do this.

@ Pilotsnoopy: They didn't mention anything about compensation for not giving me a replacement car.

Oh yeah, my sales rep said that he'd deliver the car back to me today so I'm waiting with bated breath. My wife asked me to claim all my taxi fares from them and one part of me thinks I should do that because it's the principle of the matter, but then another part of me thinks "aiyah why be so 'siew hei?'" (literally translated is 'small breath' from Cantonese but means something like picky). I don't think I'll claim lah ...
