Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

Hi all, am new here, so please pardon me if some of the questions seem obvious.

I have just purchased an e90 320i with standard Type 156 (16x7 ET34 205/55 R16) rims, of course with run-flat tyres.

I fell in love with the looks of Type 162 ( Front: 18x8 ET34 225/40 R18 ) ( Rear: 18x8.5 ET37 255/35 R18 ) rims, but have a few questions:

1. How much heavier is 162 over 156? Would my 320i be under-powered to handle the extra wheel weight/radius? Would fuel economy take a hit?

2. Is the ride going to be a lot harsher?

3. If I do get the 162, would getting normal (as opposed to run flat) tyres resolve the ride issue? Personally I don't think we need run flats in Singapore (AA members get their flats fix easily!) -- agree?

4. I don't drive aggressively, and enjoy a quiet ride. A long lasting tyre would be nice too. Is the Continental PremiumContact a suitable tyre?

5. How much should I expect to pay for the 162 wheels + tyres? Any good shops I can look for? Recommendations most appreciated.

6. Anyone wants to trade? :)

Many thanks in advance. Appreciate your views/comments.

2. Is the ride going to be a lot harsher? Yes, if you change to low profile tyres.

3. If I do get the 162, would getting normal (as opposed to run flat) tyres resolve the ride issue? Personally I don't think we need run flats in Singapore (AA members get their flats fix easily!) -- agree?

Try South East Tyres or Leong Seng, or any of the shops listed in the SG.Workshops...Alternatively, you can go for after market rims like AC Schnitzer, Hamann, Breyton, etc...

Hope the above helps. :)

Continental PremiumContact is a suitable tyre but I dun think it will be available in 255/35 R18 or 225/40 R18. In that range you are more like to get tyres like CSC2, F1 or PS2 available only.

Hi Silver 31 & BMWF1

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

Re: Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

Hi,

I am another newbies here. I purchased the same E90 that comes with standard run flat tires.

If I were to change my rim to 17inch, 225/45/17, type 161.

Would it increase my fuel consumption significantly, since I travel mostly on non express way road, with a lot of traffic light?

Do I need to different tyre size between front and rear?

thanks a lot in advance for your advice!

Hi!

I'm thinking of exactly the same thing! I'm also keen to buy the 18inch type 162 rims. On top of the questions you posed, do you know whether we need to lower the suspension of the car so that the rims and tyres don't look like there is too much of a wheel arch above it?

I've asked my agent and she also says that if we buy normal tyres, then the BMW is not catered to carry a spare tyre in the boot. And to trade in with PML for normal tyres (18inch) will only be $600 cheaper. So that's something to consider.

Re: Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

By upsizing rims and tyres, and all other things being equal, FC will go up slightly and car will feel more sluggish. U can try to mitigate by choosing lighter rims and lighter tyres. Do some minor performance mods to make up for the extra weight of the bigger rims/tyres.

For those who upsize to 17", u might want 18" later especially with the E90 coz there is alot of allowance for bigger rims. So your ride, be it on 16" or 17" may still look rather under-tyred. Choosing a set of rims with suitable offset may help to push your rims outwards a bit so as to fill the arches.

Whether a ride needs to be lowered is subjective. But people usually do so to "complete" the mod and make the car look aggressive. As to what kind of suspension to use can generate another host of discussion and recommendations.

I personally think the style 162 looks great. But like most OEM rims, the offset tends to be abit conservative.

Perhaps we can get enough people interested in 162 rims to do a group buy?

Any interest, indicate below...

Would be interested in non-run flats on the 162. Much cheaper. Besides, why would we need the 50mile drivability in Singapore? AA is 30 min away...

Re: Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

Hi,

I am running around with the 162 styling with RFT Michelin PS2. The set up is brilliant. I have the sports suspension and my initial fears were that consumption would be high. But no. They dont make my car sluggish. In fact, the new 3 series BEGS for bigger wheels! The 162 really completes the whole look.

My tyres are holding up well, very grippy and reasonably lower noise. Will get another replacement set of PS2 when the time comes. I enjoy the run flats. They arent as bad as a large majority say they are. If you choose to get the usual type, you may have to convert the space saver. BMW offer that conversion.

In my opinion, you should have bought the styling 162 when you ordered the car; you could have gotten a better deal. If you are shopping now, why not get something else? The staggered tyres and styling 162 will set you back quite a bit now.

Happy shopping bro!

Re: Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

Like T6 said, you can look for lighter rims and tyres. There are quite a number of rims available in the market.

18" minimum & 19" is the way to go if you ask me. :)

Re: Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

Thanks for the advice.

I asked for the 162 upgrade when I was ordering, but according to the sales person:
1. PML wouldn't pay for taking in the 16"
2. The wheels (excluding tyres) would cost about $3000

I was a little put off but the costs, so didn't go for it. I now know from the forum that PML has paid about $600 to some customers.... am a little p***ed about my sales person not knowing it.

Btw, what did you top up to get the 162 + PS2?

Generally, I like my car to look stock (ie. doesn't look deliberated modified), so am not sure about aftermarkets stuff. The 162, however, looks perfect with the 320i...

Peace.

wow 255 rear tyres? and i thought the 235s PML stuck at the rear of the E46 318s was bad enough. thats just wwaaay to much width for a 150hp car.

btw, you should weigh your stock rim and tyres and compare that to the new 18 inches with tyres. then consider the difference. i wouldnt be surprised if theres at lesat 2-3 kilos difference between the 2.

and if you bear in mind the 1 kilo unsprung weight = 4 kilos sprung weight rule, then you will get an idea of how much of a performance hit you might take with going to bigger fatter tyres. remember, if you are talking about performance from stationary, extra unsprung weight is a BIG issue as it adds a whole lot more rotational mass for the engine to overcome.

the other option you might want to consider is going for narrower 18 inch lighweight rims i.e. 225s or something like that.

Yah boy, that probably explains why I kena smoked BIG time in a traffic light drag with a 528i 2 days back. On paper, we are pretty close but I am using 18" staggered running 265 rear whereas he can't be using more than 17" running 235 all round. Really kena SMOKED...... Or maybe he got SC, I dunno. Keke.

Re: Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

Thanks so much for all your advice; really appreciate it.

Pardon my ignorance. If I go with 162, can I NOT go with staggered, and have both front and back 225 width? Would that be less of a burden on my "poor" 150hp 320i?

Many thanks.

Yes u can if the style 162 comes in normal 18" all round. For that, you should check with your SE.

Re: Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

if you can go 225 front and back that that would be better, but if its still the same rim, then the weight saving between 225 and 255 tyres will be marginal.

however, having same width tyres also gives you the extra advantage that you can rotate front and back tyres.

I believe that the straggering size between front and back is what captured in BMW brochure for E90. It was strange for me that only for certain style, we would need to stagger.

Any body knows why BMW is recommending this?

Re: Type 162 rims & tyres for E90 320i

staggering rim size for RWD cars is not uncommon. porsche do it as well, think MB do it for AMG models. the main reason of course is grip for launching. and to have a larget contact patch to counter power oversteer.
but why on earth its recommended for a 150hp car, i have no idea.
