Re: Used Tires for Sale

Hi, i am a new-bie here and have some questions on tires, i just bought my pre-owned E60, and the car came with a set of Westlake SA07 for the front wheels and Goodyear NCT5 for the rear wheels. from all experience of the seniors here, do you think this is ok? any concerns with safety or whatsoever? so far i had been driving for 2 months and i would say so far so good ( i am safety driver by the way, rarely goes above 120km/hr), my tire profile is 225/50/R17.

in addition, i had recently scratched the side of my front left tire against a kerb and now there is a small indention, peel off, but no warning message on tire pressure loss has appeared yet.

now question is, do i need to change to a new set of tires in view of safety reasons? thanks in advance.

Re: Used Tires for Sale

I had a set of westlakes (same model I believe) that came with my e90 when I bought it..... made in China. Every workshop I go to has asked me to change it out. I resisted until one day when I had to change my shocks, naturally, the wheels have got to be removed. And to my horror, I saw a HUGE buldge on the inner sidewall of one of the tires!!! And when I mean HUGE, it was something close to 10cm in diameter!!

Now bear in mind that this is the inner sidewall. So it's unlikely that I've hit a kerb or something - that would have affected the outer sidewall.

We don't normally peek to inspect the inner sidewall. But I'm so glad we discovered it.... Imagine what would happen if it catastrophically fails during a high speed run. I'm not talking about 200kmh..... even at 90kmh, should a tire burst, the car's gonna go into a spin...

I'm not suggesting that all Westlakes will end up this way. But one experience like this is enough to make me stay away from the brand...

Oh, BTW, I'm now on a set of Michelin PSS..... best decision ever! Don't skimp on rubber! =)

Re: Used Tires for Sale

Thanks lkm,
any idea what will be a good and reasonable choice for BMW's?

i called up some tireshops, looking for something for a quiet and comfort drive, good grip in dry and wet conditions
most quoted

Goodyear Eagle Efficientgrip - price ok, but i dont see a lot of good reviews on this
Bridgestone 050A - not so sure
Continental Contact Sport 5 - more pricy but what is the feedback?

maybe the previous owner hit something. anyway sidewall damage can occur to any brand. my FIL previous car on Michelins also developed huge bulge on one of the tyre sidewall.

does your car come with spare tyre or those inflation kit? if none and you not AA member, then might want to consider to change back to run flats. cost slightly more than normal tyres but at least no need to be worried if kenna nails/screws on roads.

Confirm not previous owner... Coz I've done tire rotation myself before.... Haha... Interesting thing is that no tell tale signs such as rim damage.... And I don't remember hitting anything... Hmmm....
