hi friends,

as promised, i've arranged great prices for you guys for sets of walkie talkies! final prices will be posted after lunch. rest assured however, that they'll be very well priced.

they are motorola t5500 talkies. i'll try my best to get these.. if not, i'll get an equivalent. don't worry, i have an eye for quality.

so anyway.. each set comes with two talkies. they have a long range of about 10km and are rechargable.

i'm using this model personally and i have had good experiences with it. ease of use, durability and battery life are above expectations. also, clarity is there within reasonable perimeters.

do note that these walkis are good for local drives; once on North South in a >5 cars convoy traveling over 130kmh, the reception will be poor. Also, the frequency and channels cannot be programmed or changed. If you guys are planning for a lot of North South drives, may also want to consider models like to motorola GP328 range....

Just wanna add.. on the NS, reception on these sets (I bought the top-of-the-line TalkAbout, but can't remember model) are not just poor, but pretty much unuseable.. I've been in a situation where 2 cars were literally side-by-side on the NS, and neither could hear each other...

If in M'sia, use the 'industrial' versions from Motorola.. which btw, even on M'sian B-Roads, if more than a couple of KMs ahead and terrain is hilly, you'll still face reception issues..

No regrets if you go with the Motorola 'GP' series.. they are well worth the price difference.. only thing to note is that even in M'sia, these sets are not legal, and should be kept away if pulled over...

The 10km, if it really claimed, is for line of sight.

We have used the talkabout set some years back during the convoy movement. Even with the convoy pack up, the first car has got problem talking to last car at 80kph.

With cars having V-Cool and stuff, the penetration level will be further reduced and rather than buy and end up in the storeroom, suggect u guys get some proper set.

With this set, u will have no problem talking to those who already have the set and it has proven well during our convoy up north or even some of the trip we made to places like KL and Cameron, where we left it on when we r in the hotel rooms, an dstill able to communicate to each other.

i've tried them on the north-south, albeit not with more than five cars, and they worked fine. but to satisfy you, i shall get quotes for both the talkabouts and the higher range GPs :)

no problem.

My vote goes to Motorola...

Not for anything else but the following:

1) Easier to get accessories
2) Easier to share charger (a bit like having a Nokia phone)
3) Tried and proven

BTW, I think the prices (thanks to drop in Euro) have dipped quite a bit for the Motorola sets.. If not mistaken, dipped about 15% to 20% from just a few months ago...
