What an expensive day! Starter motor replacement.

Not my lucky day. Car couldn't start this morning and I had to tow to a local workshop to replace the starter motor. Think I kenna carrot liao. Workshop charged me $390 for the motor, and $180 for labour. Eng Soon sells the part for $200. I understand that workshop needs to mark up on parts to make money. But close to 100% mark up?

Nope. Definitely the starter motor. No ASS on the E90 320i yah?

Re: What an expensive day! Starter motor replacement.

Which workshop was that?

Re: What an expensive day! Starter motor replacement.

I don't think it's too nice to name the workshop in this forum. But it is one of the site sponsors here.

For those who are really really curious or would like to add to your workshop blacklist or greylist, PM me.

Re: What an expensive day! Starter motor replacement.

Unfortunately emergency repairs especially done in unfamiliar workshops mostly end up costing a lot of $. Years ago had to have some work done on another car at a Bukit Merah workshop cost me lots of $$$. Never went back to that sh*t place again.

Re: What an expensive day! Starter motor replacement.

True. Some workshops take advantage of the fact that it's an emergency repair and use the opportunity to over charge. Make a quick buck here, but hurt their long term reputation. Such a myopic business strategy.

Re: What an expensive day! Starter motor replacement.

did u hav ur car tow in?? they might have incurred in the tow charges.... ??

Re: What an expensive day! Starter motor replacement.

No. I paid the tow driver myself. Cash.

Re: What an expensive day! Starter motor replacement.

Probably workshop is marking their prices against AD prices.

There is nothing not nice about naming WS if it is factual. Since it's a site sponsor, they would have a chance to explain as well.

I had the same situation and
I was quoted $600 in SG.

Luckily my car last min managed to start and I drove to another workshop to change it. [emoji4][emoji111]️

Yup... mine came up to $609... and another $50 for towing...

Re: What an expensive day! Starter motor replacement.

Mine almost ended up with the same situation with a workshop in town! So hope all is well at your side.

Re: What an expensive day! Starter motor replacement.

I don't understand why you guys refused to rely on the panel of workshops listed here, who are mostly tried and tested over the decade.

Take for instance, if you have done your research, for this repair, R2D charges $420 all in for 4-pot 3-series and $500-600 for 6-pot models.

I had the same issue and replaced it for exactly the same amount you paid. I know which workshop you went to and it is a site sponsor here. Frankly workshops markup on parts and earn labour as well, they need to survive too. They have given me good service always so Im cool :)

Yes, I admit that it was my bad for not doing research. But when the car suddenly broke down, I was fighting time - got to make sure it was settled by the day and not have to wait till next day. So my mistake was to randomly select one of the site sponsors here, rang them up, and trusted them on a fair price.

No lah - I wasn't made to sign a warranty contract, didn't ask for a refund, and wasn't given change in coins lah. I won't go so far as to say that this workshop is a crook - they are not.
