What backup do you use when you convert fm RFT?

Many bros convert their stock RFT to 19 or 20 tires to make their rides look chio...wonder what most of you do as backup in case of tire puncture?

Do you carry spare tire kit, a pump or call for AA?

When driving locally, I just pray.

When driving to Malaysia, I carry a space saver in the boot (I don't carry it when driving in Singapore as it is heavy and takes up space).

On some cars like Porsche, there is no space for spare tyre but the car is equipped with some air-refill pump. Whether owners know how to use it or not is a separate question.

Airman Instant Tire Repair - rapid 12v air compressor with Dunlop tire sealant (included)

- easy to use, inflates tires and seals punctures in minutes
- convenient, good for up to 300km at a speed of 80kmh, works on any passenger tire!
- safe, approved by leading car manufacturers!

- for cars without spare tire (cars previously running on RFTs)
- for owners who want to lighten their car by removing the spare tire.
- serve as a second spare tire, just in case...

Seems like a good idea.

I carry the BMW Mobility Kit which consists of an air pump, a bottle of adhesive, a pair of gloves and an adaptor for inflating balls, all in a nice square fabric box about 10" x 10" x 4". Bought it from PML for about $200. Airman is cheaper, $100+ I think. There is also aerosol can type of adhesive with compressed air, which is much cheaper (think only $20+ per can) but not sure got enough air to fill a large deflated tyre or not, so may have to buy a few cans.

Trouble with the above is that the adhesive has shelf-life, which means you need to replace the bottle of adhesive with new every 1-2 years.

And really RFT is not meant to replace the spare tyre per se. RFT ensures that the car would stay on course when encountering a puncture at high speed. Normal tyre would deflat and the rim would chew up the tyre, sending the car veering off course in a high speed puncture.

Of course, the added benefit of RFT is when you encounter a puncture, there is no need to do anything to the tyre except to drive below 80km/h to the nearest tyre shop to have it repaired or replaced. And also, if more than 1 tyre punctured (rare but not impossible), RFT will get you home safely while normal tyres with a spare wheel would not.

Downside of RFT are that it is costly (about $150 more per piece) and harder sidewall so some say handling and grip not as good.

Besides cost, I was told RFT is heavier too.

never seen this airman repair kit before.
to inflat a tyre is OK, i doubt most of us here can repair the tyre by yourself which you always see the tyre mech doing is simple but some time we did see them forcing the plug with difficulty too,.( so my adive to you skip this repair) just pump and go.
yes this is a approved repair method by leading car manufacturers(they supplied them too) but ONLY for temporay measure so you still need to get it further repair or check by professional mech by separating the tyre from your rim have a proper internal repair(this is the only way to make sure your tyre is still safe to use after the internal repaired)

Re: What backup do you use when you convert fm RFT?

just done the search on Airman repair kit,
Yes confirmed those repair tools are meant for temp purpose(extanal repair by forcing the
rubber plug or those sticky thing into the nail hole.
Beware of sometime this may enlarge your nail hole BIGGER(can you imaging we are inserting a 5 to time bigger diameter object into the nail hole so it may actually making your nail punctured tyre beyong repair.
If you are in the situation that need to get your car moves (do it TOO bad )
