Z4 timing at Hockenheim

The Z is more than 200kg lighter than the M

Also, >$100K cheaper! It has potential for use as a track car.

is the alpina z4 auto or manual?

Z4 Alpina S on 6 speed manual.
SLK was using 7 speed auto. (No manual available during testing :screwedu: ) 0-62.5 mph for SLK is 5.5 and 5.6 for manual and auto respectively.

Wow... did not know the timings for the Z4 3.0 and the M3 were so close... Not sure that it would be the weight that makes the difference since the power to weight ratio is as follows:

M3:4.58 kg/bhp vs Z4:5.9 kg/bhp

Especially since Hockenheim is a high speed track which favours the high powered cars. Anyone have any opinions as to why this is so?

you mean bhp right? simi si kg/ton? hahahhaha

Yah.. ok... I stand corrected... hahaha... must be sleepy since its damn cold in my office... hahaha...

I think Hockenheim has a preference for nimble and maneuverable cars instead of outright power.

At Nuerburgring :
Z4 3.0 SMG 8.32 min
E46 M3 SMG 8.22 min

For the Slalom Course 36m and 110m, top speeds reached were
Z4 3.0 SMG 131 / 149 Km/h
E46 M3 SMG 123 / 136 Km/h

In everything else, the M3 manages to out accelerate, out brake and out weigh the Z car.

hmm... from what I remember, I remember Hockenheim as a high speed, pedal to the metal course... its the one thats shaped like a kidney right??

Imagine an M powered Z4. Now that'll be really desirable for me.

The old Z3 chassis was too twitchy, with it's ancient rear suspension, to handle the power of the S54, or even S52. But the E46 chassis with the Z4 body, coupled with the S54 could really make one car that could rival the CSL.

anybody knows if BMW will make such a car? Or even better, mate it to the new E90 M3 V8?

I totally agree with you... the Z4 chasis with the S54 engine would be great! Actually I have always loved the M Coupe and was sad when they discontinued it. If they build a new version then that would be the best!

Actually, have been hearing for the longest time that the next generation M3 engine will be a V8. This is because given the current level of automotive technology, it would be impossible to increase the output of the S54 engine anymore. (Just like how the M5 went from a 3.8litre inline 6 to a 5litre V8)

I think Hartge does a 500bhp Z4 with M5 engine and M3 transmission.
At the moment, no plans for a Z4M but what we will be getting soon, maybe in Singapore maybe not, are the valvetronic 4 cylinder Z4.

The timings are not for the longer high speed track. They are referring to some other track or the infield of the high speed track or something. Look at the timings and you know.

Yeah Des, the outputs for the I-6 can get larger, higher up, and narrower, but it just is not for the average driver, plus it costs a lot to make a motor last with high piston speeds. Logical step is low tech mid-long stroke V8, or higher tech high rev, smaller stroke V8 with better specific output. I think 2 or 3 evolutions from now the V8s are going to be very sweet when they start getting to the level of tune of the current I-6. Equivalent V8 should be good for 10,500 RPM in production sportscars.

Ah... I see... now i understand... hehe... stoopid me...

Shaun: yeah man... having v8 rev to 10500 rpm will be very sweet... besides, it would be good to have a slightly flatter and fatter torque curve...
