And now, for something absolutely out of the ordinary, MINI has created a charger that is extremely large and measures about 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall. The 240V Level 2 electric vehicle charger resembles an RC controller. It was featured and used for the first two days of the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show.
You’re probably wondering by this point why MINI needed to build such a large charger and for a good reason. The BMW-owned company claims it was an ironic play on its customarily modest automobiles. However, that explanation seems less and less credible. The new Countryman would reportedly measure close to 4.5 meters (177 inches).
The XXL-sized charger is now on the market with its Nanuq White paint, a colour that was just made available for the 2023 Cooper SE. With their contrasting roofs, MINI also gives it a black top finish to mimic the company’s vehicles. Also, MINI gives a fun fact about that huge wheel control mounted on the charger’s side. Apparently, it is a tire and a wheel from the real electric hatchback.
Additionally, a 10-inch screen built into the framework shows the “Nanuq the polar bear” advertising ad for MINI. While waiting for their own electric cars to charge, users can access the MINI Electric augmented reality filter using the charger’s QR code. This allows them to discover more about the charismatic EV.
The company plans to tour the United States with the MINI RC charger so it won’t be a one-off event. “Before being packed up in a giant cardboard box and stored in the attic at mom’s house,” it will be temporarily installed at a few dealerships in California.
The show at the Los Angeles Convention Center gave a test run on how to use it. People had to find a parking spot with the words “OUT-FUN THE COMPETITION” painted inside to use the charger. Along with pointing arrows and the phrase “CHARGE THIS WAY,” these parking spaces have placards on both sides.
