In the official video above, the new MINI ALL4 all-wheel drive system is explained in rather simple terms. It made it a lot easier to understand what happens when you need more traction.

In summary, power from the front drive to the rear axle is transferred by using an angular gear on the front differential and a two-part joint shaft. The center of the entire system is an electro-hydraulic multiple-disk clutch (Hang-On) fitted inside the rear axle drive. This bit allows the car to vary in torque distribution between the front and rear wheels via a hydraulic pump. The result is an understeer that’s useful in sticky situations and a great solution for MINI cars.
