[VIDEO] BMW iX runs 193 miles with 16% battery left

While battery technology is improving, some people still worry about running out of charge before they find a charging station. If the EV is equipped with winter tires, such as the large 21-inch wheels on this BMW iX with 255/50 R21, it becomes more difficult to drive on a cold winter day.

According to WLTP, BMW’s iX xDrive50 can travel up to 630 km (391 miles). However, the actual range rarely matches this figure as the range in the US EPA is 300 miles. This is especially true when the outside temperature is only 2 degrees Celsius (35.6 degrees Fahrenheit). At this relatively high speed, YouTuber Battery Life decided to test the electric SUV.

He drove the luxury SUV for 193.3 miles (311 kilometres) on the German autobahn. It comes with the huge 111.5-kWh battery fully charged. Due to traffic and the fact that he had to change roads, he was unable to maintain 130 km/h throughout. Instead, he reached an average speed of 119 km/h (74 mph), which was close to his target.

To maximise efficiency, the BMW iX xDrive50’s temperature was set at 22 °C (72 °F) and the air conditioning was not turned on. It took two hours and 36 minutes to reach its destination; the SOC was 16%, and its average consumption during this time was 28.3 kWh / 100 km. This means that the vehicle would have travelled 230 miles (370 kilometres) before reaching 0% SOC. Even if this is below the WLTP rating, it is not a fair comparison since the iX was driven in extremely cold conditions on winter tires.
