[Video] BMW M3 Competition xDrive vs Audi RS4 Avant

When BMW introduced the all-wheel-drive M3, the Audi RS4 Avant was its main rival. Thanks to a new video by Joe Achilles, we can see which car is better. The RS4 Avant has long been the go-to sports car for families who need all-weather capability and spaciousness. It dominated the market for sports waggons (and sedans) in colder climes, notably the Northeastern US and Scandinavia. Due to their rear-wheel drive and brisk handling, BMW M3s were never popular in such regions. Forget about buying one; no one needs a car they can’t drive in the cold.

BMW M3 Competition xDrive can now compete with Audi with all-wheel drive and a waggon option. The question is whether the older RS4 still has the advantage due to its global experience.

Here we see Achilles putting the new Audi RS4 Avant Carbon Black Edition through its paces against his own BMW M3 Competition xDrive. Nonetheless, it should be noted for the sake of balance that his M3 has seen some minor modifications. Because of the modified strut bar, Milltek exhaust, and Eventuri air intake, as well as the excellent alignment, the car drives with greater accuracy than the factory version. This means that his vehicle isn’t exactly up to par.

Audi RS4 Avant’s 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 produces 444 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque, while the M3 Comp’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo I6 makes 503 hp. Each vehicle is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission made by ZF and is all-wheel driven. Despite Audi’s claimed 4.1-second pace in a standing 100-meter sprint, the RS4 Avant achieved times closer to 3.3 seconds in real-world testing. While those times are impressive, the BMW M3 Competition xDrive’s time of 2.99 seconds to 60 mph is ridiculous.
