We all know that one of the best M3s ever made in BMW history is the G80Â BMW M3 Competition. So, today, we have YouTuber Joe Achilles, owner of an M3 Competition, but with the automatic transmission. It’s not his choice, though, because only the Competition models are available in the UK market. Not even a standard manual-equipped vehicle is provided as an option. Therefore, knowing that a G82Â BMW M4Â with a manual transmission would be his loaner car in his BMW trip in Germany, Achilles was so ecstatic. And in this video, he takes us with him on some road test.
So, if you’re wondering about the difference between both cars in terms of ride and performance, you might as well play the video now. Although it’s not a complete comparison video, we get to hear some of Achilles’ comparisons between the two models.
From what it looks like, Achilles appears to love driving the manual vehicle far more than he does his own Competition model. Without a doubt, Competition-spec cars have powerful performance. They are quicker, more luxuriously equipped, and have more aggressive exhaust acoustics. However, it seems like Achilles favours the engagement of a decent manual transmission over the efficient but less engaging automatic.
As far as manual transmissions go, those in the M3/M4 are definitely not the finest; they’re a touch slick and rubbery and have a springy clutch. Additionally, the engine and automatic seemed to work better together. However, it’s still a manual transmission, and the BMW M4 (or M3) manual gearbox is an excellent choice for enthusiasts who require only three pedals for driving enjoyment.
