Hi,

we are torn between making a decision between the

1993 316IA $22,000 COE till Aug 2011

1992 318IA $24,000 COE till Feb 2012

Which would you guys choose?

Which one has lower fuel consumption?

I hear the 316 is underpowered.... what exactly does this mean???

Thanks in advance...

Toss a coin if you can't decide, give me any of those 2 and I should be enjoying myself. 316 no power I agree coz I own one.. but I still go whack a few round at Sepang now and then.. kekekkeke..Not as bad as you think lah, can beat the group of Ah Pek (I think retiree) driving their RX-8 woh. .kekekekek..however, if they are like 30 years younger I'm sure it'll be a different story liao.

Re: 1993 316ia Vs 1992 318ia - Help!

haha...... and thanks for the welcome.

does it cost alot in fuel consumption (the 316)?

how does it compare to the 318 in fuel consumption?

thanks for your replies.

Re: 1993 316ia Vs 1992 318ia - Help!

I feel tat 316 will burn more fuel than 318! due to the weight of the car. Also depend driving habit.. slow steady or cheong type..
for ur reference;
my car 318iS use to be 8.5km/litre, after some "mod" never go below 10km/litre with same driving habit & more horse power, very very often almost everyday 1st gear 6000rpm, 2nd gear 6000rpm, 3rd gear 110km/hr then 5th gear 90km/hr on high way (left 12point awaiting court order)... :lol2:

Re: 1993 316ia Vs 1992 318ia - Help!

I would give up the idea and get myself a 325 and bore up to 328 with a straight thru exhaust system to Sound like R34 kakaka

& buy a honda city tot the feul meter spoil ... dropping too slow!!
:lol2: :lol2: :lol2:
but u got money then power comes 1st hehe..

Re: 1993 316ia Vs 1992 318ia - Help!

agreed! everything voices down to vitamin M hehee. 5km/L?!!!? golly! my baby can clock abt twice as that mileage /L. Sis meilin? i suggest you take a drive for both cars to find out hows the conditions(aircon, engine head bah bah) to determine because it does matter at the end of the day which car will you bring to visit the workshop more offen. You know what i mean?

Re: 1993 316ia Vs 1992 318ia - Help!

yes - we have test driven both.....

both seem good - though yes the 316 seems a bit sluggish....

there's quite a bit of diff on road tax.... $933 for 318 and $617 for 316

$2000 diff in up front price

just need something to get us from A-B over the next 5 years.... not planning on "racing around" in it!!! :)

Re: 1993 316ia Vs 1992 318ia - Help!

oh then my vote goes to 316. The 'sluggish' part can be cured by 'poisons' hehe so not to worry.
Good luck!

Re: 1993 316ia Vs 1992 318ia - Help!

given tt u want a car tt gets u from A to B, and that you dont plan to do much(or any for tt matter) 'spirited driving' in it..
then i would say that the 316 is more than enough.

i've got one myself..
it's a manual, which is less sluggish than an auto box.
But i get excellent fuel consumption, not sure how it compares to the 318, maybe someone else can share on tt, but i'm getting 9.5 to 10km/l with a 50/50 mix of city / highway driving.

so my opinion is, there isnt much of a diff btw 316 n 318, both are 4 cylinders and if all u wan to an A to B car, then no pt forking out the extra in rd tax..
just my 2 cts..

A to B, go for 316i , cheers

1992-98 BMW 318i: FYI

Air conditioner: Air conditioners that don't cool well enough may need to have some of the R-12 (Freon) removed if the system was overcharged. (1992-93)
Automatic transmission: The automatic transmission may suffer from delayed engagement after sitting overnight because the fluid drains out of the torque converter. (1992-95)

Climate control: Small flakes may come from the vents or a foul odor may be present when the A/C is operated. (1992-93)

Dashboard lights: The hazard flashers may begin flashing by themselves and the turn signals may flash at twice the normal speed due to condensation shorting out the circuit board. (1992-94)

Doors: If the central locking system unlocks itself after being locked or locks itself after being unlocked, the actuators could be defective or the trunk lock may need to be adjusted. (1992-93)

Starter: The starter may fail because it keeps running after the engine starts and eventually burns out. The root cause is a sticking ignition switch. The whole lock and switch must be replaced. (1992-94)

Re: 1993 316ia Vs 1992 318ia - Help!

Hey all,

Your replies have been really helpful - I am leaning towards the 316.

BUT:

These are the comments I have gotten from people...

I called BMW - Performance Motors and spoke to a BMW "expert"... i asked him which one he would choose - he said NEITHER!!!! he said the BMW engine was not made to last in this type of humidity and really shouldn't be sold/bought after 10 years - hrmmm...

ALSO : the comment I got from the dealer trying to sell me the 318 was:

" the 316 is VERY underpowered" your husband is very big (he is ang mor hehe) she said the weight of him will make the car EVEN more underpowered... hrrmmmm

Can someone also tell me why:

i have noticed that COE usually expires 10 / 20 years after the car was registered so

a 1991 car's COE will expire in 2011....................... a 1992 car's COE will expire in 2012

HOW COME at 1993 model 316i expires in 2011? all of them do.... how is this possible?

thanks again

meilin

Re: 1993 316ia Vs 1992 318ia - Help!

hi meilin focus.. every1 have an objective to ask u buy or better not buy..
I buy my 318iS in 15mins, simply i like it
.. if you A-B, then no need consider, besides BMW u shld consider go buy a new japanese car brand new, 3 yrs warranty with no worries, low fuel, no heating problem..
But insist BMW then u must be happy when u buy, 316 & 318 is so far so good.. unless
u buy a "bad luck" car.. good luck to ur buy :cloud9:

Re: 1993 316ia Vs 1992 318ia - Help!

hrmmm...Maybe that expert is not a well travelled person.i travelled widely to many countries with worst humidity than singapore.seen so many old BMW's running around without much problems.Sad u spoke to this kind of expert who dont know much about BMWs potential. .
