Someone hit me please. Just recently backside a bit itchy.
I was wondering what is the difference between a 320i and 318i SE, if i buy a 320i, will i be able to swop parts and end up with a 320i SE?? hehehe
Beside the obvious,
1) Engine
2) Suspensions, Stocks,
3) Body kits - Full M3
4) Seats...etc etc
Is the 318i SE engine different from 318i?

Re: 320 vs 318 Sports.

1. Both engines are valvetronics. however, the E90 is aluminium-magnesium. E90 churns out 150bhp while the E46 only 143bhp. 150bhp is achieved thru mods in air-intake, exhaust and probably ECU.
2. Suspensions/Shocks. Hmmm... Dont know if they are using Boge again on the E90.
3. E90 is totally different from the E46. Body wise. So the kits will not fit perfectly. However, some of our trusted body work shops might just be able to cut, paste etc for you. Might as well buy the E90 SE i think.
4. Seats looks the same to me. The sports ones. So maybe can.

Are you talking about the E46 318i Sports Edition vs the E46 320i, or the E90 320i?

Assuming you are talking about E46 320i,
1. engine is different. M54 vs N42 (318i valvetronic) - which is the same as in the E90 320i.
2. suspensions and shocks are different.
3. body kit on the SE is the M-Tech II. Can swap.
4. seats - SE has sports seats front, and alcantra headlining, also has black window trims.

E46 318i SE engine same as the E46 318i, but I believe there is a slight power tuning from the first batch of E46 318i N42 valvetronic to the SE.

Hope that helps.

Re: 320 vs 318 Sports.

There's also the black roof lining and M Sports (not M3) steering wheel on SE's.

Re: 320 vs 318 Sports.

Sorry, I was referring to E46 320i. I do feel that the engines rev a bit differently for 318i and 318i SE. So, seems like I can buy a 320i and do the swop to get a 320i SE. correct me if I'm wrong....sounds tempting.

Re: 320 vs 318 Sports.

i believe before the stock went out, PML was selling E46 320i SE too.

what do you mean by slight power tuning? you mean the 318i is more powerful or 318i SE?
i thought is the same? unless u talking about pre FL 318i which is not valvetronic

the engines are the same, they call it the 318 Sports Edition / 320 sports editon/ 330 sports editon cause of the sports kit(front m-tech II bumper,m-tech II sideskirts,m-tech rear bumper and bootlip), sports steering wheel (M-Steering), sports seats. NO tune up of engine or watsoever... that's just ur mind playing tricks on u .. the car is just kitted up.

Re: 320 vs 318 Sports.

okie... the shocks for the 318i and 320i (E46) are different... however, you can install the M anti-roll bar on the 320i... but damn expensive...

if it is just to kit it up, yes... you can swap...

Thanks! But for a 320i i would have more mod potential right? Inside the engines like pulleys, cams etc etc. Why doesn't 318i have those?? I understand now, might keep my eyes look out for a decent 320i

firstly, u talking abt a straight inline 6 with a valvetronic inline 4. the 4 pot has no pulleys, only one .. and why arent there any mod for a 318.. man.. that im not too sure i can ans u ... maybe it's not so easy to break into the valvetronics yet.

Re: 320 vs 318 Sports.

Yah I do know it's a 6pot vs a 4pot. Regarding what is inside, how come no pulleys etc etc. The only thing i understand is...The more you pay, the more horsepower you have :lol2: :lol2:

Dude, i just said cause the 4pot has no pulleys. It only has one main pulley, 4pot is also a valvetronic which more diff to mod.

Re: 320 vs 318 Sports.

Some misconceptions here. Apparently some claimed the last batch of E46 318i runs on the N46 valvetronic engine, same as that in E90 320i (needs verification here). The N46 block churns out 150 bhp, instead of the N42 block from the normal E46 318i which churns 143 bhp. Perhaps the sports edition label accounts for this variance, if true.

The sports editions is primarily aesthetics - bodykits, M68 rims, sports suspension. Now if the price difference between the two lies in these factors, you might wanna revalue (1) the current value of assembling these mods, assuming you only love the MTEC kit and M68 rims and not any other aftermarket parts; (2) the potential to mod up horsepower.

The 4-pot Valvetronic engine is pretty much sterile as far as power enhancement is concerned. If you are power-hungry, you cannot go far with both the N42 or N46 blocks. But the 6-cylinder M43 engine block in E46 320i allows you do much more. Legally and otherwise.

At least on paper......

I'm currently driving a E46/ 2004 318i SE. Indeed, the E90 320i and the E46 318i are usuing the same engine. The slight different in the BHP is, I believe, a result of different tuning. The engine are basically the same.

The SE is both aesthetics and functional. The E46 318i is basically the same as the E46 318i Executive when they are both available during 2003 - 2004. The only difference are the M kits package that differentiates the Sport editions. The M package includes a list of accesories as mentioned. The most distinguished ones are the Sport seats (which are dammn comfortable) and the suspensions (which are firmer than the Executives).
