5 jailed, caned in Downtown East fatal stabbing case

Five youths who stabbed and slashed a polytechnic student in a 2010 Downtown East fight have pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and were sentenced on Friday.

In the incident, 19-year-old Darren Ng Wei Jie died from his injuries after being slashed and stabbed with knives, choppers and a screwdriver by a group of more than 10 youths.

The five who were sentenced on Friday are:



Ho Wui Ming, 22, was jailed 11 years, 3 months and sentenced to 10 strokes of the cane
Chen Wei Zhen, 21, was sentenced to 10 years and 10 strokes
Edward Tay Wei Loong, 20, was sentenced to 10 years and 10 strokes
Louis Tong Qing Yao, 17, was sentenced to 8 years and 11 strokes
Stilwell Ong Keat Pin, 20, was sentenced to 12 years and 12 strokes

Ong, believed to be the main culprit, received the stiffest sentence. Prosecutors argued that he had gathered the accused and other accomplices to Downtown East for the confrontation.

Two others also faced separate charges relating to moneylending, theft, and mischief.

Ho faced two other charges for theft and mischief, while Tong faced two moneylending-related charges.

In mitigation, their lawyers said the fight had erupted in the heat of the moment and that the boys were genuinely remorseful.

Seven others linked to the case have earlier been jailed and caned for rioting.

With other related charges, the sentence is light. They should get the max.
I'm not surprise that they will start all over again 10 years later. They are just 30ish.. still a dragon...

any idea how they gonna administer the caning? my understanding was.. whack .. heal ..whack.. times 12.
so all will be done in the first 2 years? or they whack once a year.. mainly to prolong the pain and trauma as lesson to be learnt.. slow and painful payback!

the jail time might be easier as compare to the caning...

Ur understanding is wrong. Caning is administered only once. Doctors will be there to observe in case the fella faints or wayangs. If the fella faints, he will be revived by the doc n if doc says ok to continue, then caning continues. If doc says no more, then stops n caning is considered as meted out. No such thing as instalment. The remaining strokes will be commuted to prison time.

if one can tahan 4/6 strokes ... 3x/2x canning ... cane ... heal ... cane again
if one can tahan only 2 strokes ... 6x canning ... prolong healing and trauma ...
best is 12 strokes at one go ... but i doubt anyone can tahan 12 strokes not even with big butt

Nope, there have been a few who Kenna 24 strokes n endured all 24 of them at one shot. Just trauma after that

Looks like the 51 years of prison sentence for taking One life was shared among the 5 guys.

I read somewhere that the first 2 strokes will caused superficial pain. Hit 4 strokes, it will hurt the internals. Come 6 strokes, you risk erectile functionality. Above 8 strokes, you are as good as impotent for life. Also not forgetting the physical pain, scars and trauma.

Socially, they will never be accepted by the society when they are released in the 30s. Nobody will hire an ex-convict, let alone a murderer. Family may not want them back..... life will be as good as death. Perhaps death sentence is better. This is a sad case. Never underestimate the consequences of triads and gangster activities in Singapore. Bring up your kids right and spend more time and TLC with them so that they will not go astray.
