5 series questions

Hi guys,

Just doing some research for a friend. He's planning to buy a previous gen 5 series, it's a 523 or 525, not too sure. Just wanna know was there a facelift for the previous gen 5 series? and which year was the facelift implemented? And do all 5 series come with "angel eyes"?

Not well-versed with the 5 series range, so your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Roy,

Yes there are facelifted E39s, and i believe the new cars were facelifted sometime in 2000. There was an offer by PML to facelift E39s and it consisted of complete headlight cluster replacement and some other (if not, none) changes.

Previous pre-facelifted 5 series had no angel eyes. Facelifted E39s and current E60s have stock yellow angel-eyes.

If your friend is looking for a stock facelifted E39, the best bet is to check with YOM of the car, and call PML to verify the date whether it's PFL or FL.

Thanks for the info Ryan. I think my friend was looking at a MY2000 5er. Are all MY2000 5ers facelifted? Apparently, the one he was looking at doesn't come with angel eyes. He can't call PML to verify 'cos he's buying the car in another country, private imported too if I am not mistaken.

The e39 5 series was facelifted in late 2000. The 523i (2500cc) was replaced by 525i(2500cc). Bhp went up from 170bhp to 192bhp.

Only the facelifted ones come with angel eyes + round fog lites. But an owner of a pre-fecelift 5 series can easily face-lift it. Best to double-check the log-card.

My friend juz exported his June 2001 black fully AC-kitted, AC exhaust and with GPS for $108k all in (i.e. return of OMV, COE and body value).

after that the cars came with MFS and cruise control and the facelift

then came late 00/Early 01

if u want to get a 523iA u should get a '00 model with cruise control and MFS

523iA is 170bhp same as the 520 2.2
525ia is abt 193bhp almost the same as 528
530ia is 230bhp

best buy 530 esp now the prices are low.

525i is 192bhp and 530i is 231bhp. Agree that the 530i wld be the ideal, but a good one is hard to come by though.

there was 2 in the market recently, one with mileage of 36k but asking very high 14xK+, 3 yr old should be abt 12xk +. i think one has been sold (not the 36kmiles). cheers
