Auto to Manual

Has anybody ever managed to officially change a car from auto to manual, this seems to be the classic catch 22 situation? If anyone can advise I would be grateful.
My e36 auto tranny is on its last legs so I thought it would be good to replace this with a manual. The LTA told me that this is no problem all I have to do is buy it from PML and get them to write a letter to the LTA vehicle engineering saying that it can be used with car. For laugh I phoned PML to see what they would say
Problem 1 - PML want $5,400 +gst for a reconditioned Getrag 5 speed( gearbox only )
Problem 2 - PML will not write any letter to the anyone saying that it can be used as there are potential "safety issues". What safety issues I asked as the only alteration to the sub frame is a change to a BMW approved part (transmission support cross member or such) and a few changes to the drive shaft and fly wheel and addition of clutch cylinders etc. The response was just "safety issues cannot like that lah"

Does this mean that PML do not know how to install a manual transmission?

Does anyone know what these mysterious "safety issues" concerning manual transmissions are?

Re: Auto to Manual

suggest go to a recommended workshop and ask them to do everthing for you including the paper work. "Manual" rocks :yummie:

Hi Jin Teck

Could you explain how would a recommended workshop do the paperwork which will be officially approved by LTA?

Also typical price for such BMW conversion labor + paperwork?

If this is sensitive, grateful if u can PM? :)

Thks

Re: Auto to Manual

bro, had my previous e36 converted from auto to manual 5-sp in 2001 and then my e46 from steptronic to manual 6-sp in 2005.

work is quite straightforward and takes about 2-3wks. however, the $$ back then was about 8k if i remember for the e36 and about 14k for the e46.

however, the specs on the tranny was slightly than the stock manual as they had to handle the engines mated with them.

you should be able to have it done stock at about 2k less.

PM me if you need more details.

PML...ALWAYS TALK COCK and also NEVER are liable for most aftermarket issues even though the parts are from bmw.

I changed mine into a zf 5 speed and these include changes in the shaft and
even fully reinforced all undercarriage parts with "Dillox" and delrin n polyutherene...this includes mounted parts at rear axle and front including crossmembers......Till now....touch wood ...drives like a train and is tough like a train!!! What safety issues.....???
