525i Rims & Tires

Hello Friends out there ........

I am currently driving 525iA 2004 model and interested to upgrade the original rims and tires 225/55/16. any suggestion on what rims size, staggered setup, and also what type of tires to go for? Will the power be reduced and consumption goes up ? Consumption is 8km/l now.

Tires shop is recommending to go for Front 245/35/19 & Rear 285/30/19. anyone can give some suggestions and will appreciate.

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

If you up the rim size, you will find the consumption increasing and comfort decreasing.

You might also find that when you start off, it might not be as fast as when you are/were on the original 17".

However, if you upgrading to bigger rims, usually aesthetics is the main reason, of which, then the above shouldn't really concern you.

285 is a little wide but it would look good from the back.

BTW, which rims are you planning on getting? - remember, the weight of the rims also drags up consumption unless it is lighter than the stock one.

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

Here is a sample of a staggered set , 8.5 front and 10 rear. These are Hamann rims and I think the offset is just right for me. This is just plush on the fender and does not need any spacer.

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

I forgot to mention that you will need to lower your ride as keeping it stock does not look good with the big gap between the tires and the fenders.

Here is another shot from the front and side. Hope this helps

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

Thank you very much, friends . The info shared is very helpful and it make sense. Btw what rims and tires size are you on ? Cheers !

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

Another point to note, the 35/30 profile is a little low for 19". I'm on 20" and both my front and back are 30.

Basically, the higher the number, the more comfortable it is. However, this set up is more comfortable than the stock 17" with RFT.

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

The profile number is calculated as a percentage of the width of the tires. While it is correct that the higher profile number means that the tire sidewall is higher assuming you maintain the same width. However, if this is not done with the tolerance level , one will get a wrong reading on the speedometer.

So it is not accurate to state that profile for a rim size is low without knowing what is the width size of the rim.

For example , A typical profile of 30 is for size 19in rims with a width of 8.5in (tire specs 235/30/19) is almost equal to 215/50/17. The table below shows

Tire 1 - 235/35R19 vs Tire 2 - 215/50R17

Section Width:9.25in 235mm Section Width:8.46in 215mm
Rim Diameter:19 in 482.6 mm Rim Diameter:17 in 431.8 mm
Rim Width Range:8 - 9.5 in Rim Width Range:6 - 7.5 in
Overall Diameter:25.47 in 646.93 mm Overall Diameter:25.46 in 646.68 mm
Sidewall Height:3.23 in 82.042 mm Sidewall Height:4.23 in 107.44mm

Speedometer Difference: 0.036% too fast
Diameter Difference: -Diameter Difference: 0.04% , which is within the 3% tolerance level

So one cannot say that a 30 profile for a 19 inch rims is low without taking into account the width of the tires and rims as this is a ratio of the width.

For my staggered setup, the front is using 235/35/19 as the rim width is 8.5in and rear is 275/30/19 as rim width is 10in

Hope this helps.

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

Thank you very much ....... very detail info and i understand. Anyway your setup is very close to the tire shop recommendation of 245/35/19 front and 285/30/19 Rear. I have also checked that with this tires size, the overall diameter is exactly same as the original size. Thanks

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

Just ensure that the offset of the rims is correct, I really do not know what is the correct offset , I just trust that the tire shop knows what to do.

BTW, fuel consumption will be affected specially if you do a lot of "start and stop" driving but the looks is worth it :)

Cheers

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

Take a look at the tyre pressure label at the driver door B pillar. There are quite a few combinations of tyre-wheel sizes that will fit the E60 (provided the correct rim offset is used). If recalled correctly, 19in staggered is recommended to have 245/35 front and 275/30 rear (not sure why not 285/30 as this size is actually closer to the 225/50R17 stock setup).

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

I guess 275/30 recommendation is that in terms of speedometer impact, the reading will be less than what is displayed , so a 100 kph is actually 99 kph , while a 285/30 size will be on the higher side than what is displayed , so the likelihood that you will be breaking the speed limit is higher.

That's my guess, never did ask my Tire shop as I trust he knows what he is doing.

Cheers

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

I am confused but thanks anyway ...... the tire diameter you mentioned is 9mm smaller than the stock. Speedometer will be inaccurate let alone the big gap between tires and chassis. Different tires shop recommend different size guess it depends on their stock availability. cheers

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

There is a sticky on this forum for Tire Calculator and you will see how the profile is calculated based on the width of the rims. It will also allow you to compare your stock tires specifications against the size of rims you are planning to put in.

The most important thing to consider now is the offset as different manufacturers have different offiset. otherwise you may either need a spacer or roll the fenders.

Hi Ken,

Am having my KW 2s removed from my 523 at Juz4Cars today so speak to Amos about having it installed into your car if you are looking to purchase. Its just under a year old. If you are keen, we can do a swop with my 18 inch rims too, and oh yes, I have a sprintbooster for sale too which would speed up your 525 significantly :)

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

hello to all the experts out there .....

Need your advice again . I have upgraded my stock rims to a brand new set of M5 replica 19inch rims and tire recently. However, after the mod i can feel steering vibrates at around 100-110 kmh. Despite travelling back and forth to do balancing, high speed balancing the problem persist.

I was suspecting it was the replica rims and therefore i have no choice but to trade in for a set of Breyton original rim to once for all settle the problem. Was very excited as the rims was super light(around 8.5kg) but was short lived. Vibration is still there at around 100 to 120 kmh. Looks like it has nothing to do with the rims.

Can someone share some light here ? Totally lost..... seems like there are some other mech problem and i hope it is not something major. Will be heading to workshop soon. Help ....

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

Hi Ken, What Breyton rims are you on? The new ones (cs, gt....) that require 20mm spacer for both front & rear?

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

Hi guys, would you be able to advice me on the difference between the sprintbooster and power paddle? Thot of installing one of these to increase the torque but would like some info on which is more suitable.

Thanks for reading..

Re: 525i Rims & Tires

Can anyone pls advise if the rims from the various BMW models directly interchangable?
If not, what can fit the E60? I just got myself a E60 and looking for rims. :)Thanks in advance!
