Hi

Am in the midst of getting a new BMW 5, undecided between the 525i and 520i...

Kindly advise.

Thanks in advance :)

Re: 525i vs 520i

Hi. Sounds like there is something specific about the 520 which attracts you (if not just the price).

I am sure you will appreciate the extra horses in the 525. Of course, if FC is a concern, I suppose the 520 will be more economical, unless you are a heavy footer. ;-) Maybe some other bro with 520 can advise you on their FC experience?

For the extra ~20k, I personally went with the 525 given the higher OMV and higher equipment level (17" with run flat etc)

Hope this helps and good luck with your purchase! :)

Re: 525i vs 520i

Hi

Thanks for the advice...

Currently driving Audi A4 2.0MU and initially was keen to upgrade to A6 2.0T but recently had a change in mind. Realised that Beemers seem to handle better, and not to mention that OMV for Beemers is much higher.

Personally, am attracted to 525 for that extra power, but am concerned about the 20K difference which is lots in this current situation.

Stilling thinking....

Re: 525i vs 520i

Personally, IL-6 is basic requirement for E60 for smooth driving due to its weight (1.6t). IL-4 may struggle in E60.

Re: 525i vs 520i

Similarly, I started out quite similar as you ... intended to buy the 320 but in the end, ended up buying the 325 instead.

Initially thought, aiyah ... 2 litres engine still sufficient to just drive from point A to point B, road tax cheaper and afterall it's still a BMW, then itchy backside and asked the Sales Person to test drive the 325, the rest as others would say is history. Fell in love with the sweet revving of the inline 6 straight away! I don't regret this decision and felt that it's worth every cents that I'm forking out for this car.

So, if your budget permits, go for the 525 man. :)

You've said it man... even with the IL-6 now I am already tempted with the Sprint Booster. Just doesn;t take off from stationary like the E46 318 used to...

When I test drove the 520, the average rev was around 4000 and several times reached almost 6k. But then again, if you are heavy footed and likes to rev all the time... it may just work... (though a little frustrating to overtake) :)

Only 20K difference between the 520 and 525? Thought the 520 is around 150K with OMV at 46K and 525, about 190K and OMV 60K? My May 2007 525 has OMV at 61K.

Dude... Your OMV much higher than mine man! Lucky you! :)

The numbers you mentioned are retail... "significant" discounts offered during these times of bad economy and low COE prices... Hit the 5-Series home page on PML for an indication of the amount I am talking about.... :screwedu:

Re: 525i vs 520i

Dude,

I agree that an in-line 6 cylinder is minimum to pull the 5 series (e60) body. I know it comes down to $ and c. But now given that the new 520i is the 4pot engine carry over from the 3 series, I am not so sure u may like it. Spend the extra and get the 525i. Otherwise u will regret when u wanna sell and some 2nd hand dealers will smirk at the model and give u a low-ball quote saying its a 4pot and no value etc...

If the original 2.2litre in-line 6cylinder 520i was still being offered,- I would say - save your money and buy the 520i inline6. Its really too bad that BMW discontinued that 2.2litre Inline6. I personally thought that was really the baseline engine to pull the e60 respectably.

Otherwise, if u are not fussy, I am sure there are plenty of good condition well taken care of 6cylinder 520i out there for sale. The money u saved, you can spend on a sprint booster, add on a K&N filter and do up a nice ipod adaptor to your car or even add on a m5 body kit.

Of course, I wanna add this is my humble opinion only. 5 yrs ago, my sis and i bought e46 together. Mine was just the entry level 4pot 318i and hers was a inline6 320i. Guess what - although there's a 'creamy feel' from pedal to foot, over time, you dont really feel that any more.
My sis paid more vs me. when we traded in for new car, I move to the e60 520i (the 6cylinder 2.2litre) , my sis moved to a benz..., the dealer din really significantly much more than my 318.
So just a food for thought.

Ultimately - its yr call. Have fun

Bro,

Your 525 has GPS, Active Steering, Adaptive Headlights etc. The current batch of 525s that PML is bringing in don't have all these. They are essentially like the 523s except for the more powerful engine and minus sunshade, hence much cheaper than before.

Can't seem to locate pricing info on PML website. Nonetheless, should we not use the "retail" numbers for comparison as they're more realistic?

I see; didn't know that. Thanks for advice. Then I would say go for a 1-2 years old 525i (with all the added options as mentioned above) and you probably can get around S$150K. I might be selling if the price is reasonable... haha.

Ya, wasat the Dunearn PML showroom which has a used car division, and there was a handful of 525i with all these additional features - GPS, Active Steering, rear sun shade, Adaptive Headlights etc.

Saw one which is about 4 months old, about 4k mileage - asking for 160+ K.....

Re: 525i vs 520i

Hi, I just bought the 525, and the OMV registered was only 51K compared to the previous ones with more options and higher Euro.

Been thinking about the sprintbooster, heard also there's an alternative called Power Paddle, anyone can advise me on the difference and if this would affect the warranty from PML?

Thanks!

Just curious... what price did you manage to get your 525?
Also, am curious what interior color did you select?

Re: 525i vs 520i

Hi guys,

I believe I did get a good price for the ride at below SG160K, stock car. I selected beige for my interior, found it to be quite different and easier to maintain. How about you bmguy?

They used their stock open cat COE's which we above SGD10K, mine was registered as around SGD8K for my COE.

Re: 525i vs 520i

Hi Pmguy,

Sharing with you, my younger brother has recently got the 520i, his comment was the sloppiness of the engine when the car was seated with 4 adults, otherwise it's still a nice car. I do believe a car with a more responsive and torqy engine is important, safety wise...especially when you are over taking or crossing junctions.

I think PML can offer you a better price if you insist, at current conditions.
