YESTERDAY's report ("Miss Universe to admit women with sex change") quoted a spokesman for Derrol Stepenny Promotions, which organises the Singapore edition of the Miss Universe pageant, as saying that the natural-born hopefuls will be competing against transgender women who have had plastic surgery.

She added that it will be up to the non-transgender contestants to compete in other ways besides through their natural beauty, for example, through their wit and intelligence.

In saying this, the organiser's spokesman made a sweeping statement based on stereotypes of transgender women.

Not all of us have had plastic surgery such as breast augmentation or facial construction surgery; neither are others keen on surgery on other parts of their bodies.

Some of us are wise enough to stay away from a flesh parade that will subject us to ridicule and further stereotyping.

I hope the staff of Derrol Stepenny Promotions will try to learn more about our community and the daily challenges we face before making superficial remarks about us.
