air con filter: Activated carbon vs white plain ones

Just replaced my air-con pollen filter. Activated carbon ones were out of stock, so I got the white plain ones.

Driving around, I feel I am getting occasional stronger odor and exhaust fume smell as compared to when I had the activated carbon ones.

Psychological?
