can anyone advise why setting the temp at 18 degC will not put stress to the system by kicking in the heater???

thought Radon39 had a 20 degC number in another thread... also, shouldnt setting a lower temp cause stress to the compressor??? besides, we cant even get to 20 degC on a hot sunny day in Spore i think... means the compressor will keep working...

Would be good if some experts out there can share on this topic.

To my knowledge, the so-called "heater" uses heat produced by the engine and hence there is no additional heater hardware to generate the heat.

Turning on the heater in a car also helps to reduce engine temperature, esp. if the car is on the verge of overheating due to coolant / radiator problems. Had that unpleasant experience once on the 2nd Link.

As ridiculous as it may sound, i had the entire heater removed from the system 2 years ago. So now every time my air con is on, its max cold. Been gunning my car left right centre up and down, sepang and drag srtips with air con on.

Still, its holding up fine. Mileage at 94,000km already. Maybe just coincidental. Just wondering since you brought it up.

The CSA said that we should keep our temp at 18 degrees and below. Apparently, anything higher would involve the heater kicking in and adding stress to the system.

stress the system? the heater matrix is usually after the condenser. so there is no difference the the a/c condenser. The heater is used to regular the air temps to what you set. so actually sometimes its wasting more petrol by running the a/c. ie cool and then heat up to maintain temps

Once in a while we need to top up our air con gas. When the aircon man does so, he hooks up a gadget that has two valves - one red, the other blue. Can anyone share their knowledge as to how we should read the two valve meters. For that matter how do we know that the aircon chap has top up the maximum amount of gas for that $20 -$25 we pay to top up the air con gas in our cars. Thanks

Hi,
After speaking to some air con guys, with the new BMW air cond system nowadays, if the workshops still use the 2 pressure gauages to monitor the gas quantity/weight etc, this method is no longer the accurate one. Having to say that, e36 and before, there is window valve where you could see if the gas is enough BUT no longer having it on e46 onward.
The most accuarte way to check is to have the low and high pressure ends connected to the stayalone machine whereby this machine will vacuum out all the gas in the air cond system together with the oil, measured their weights. Pumped them back at specific needed weight/oil afer that. You may noticed that there is a piece of sticker below the bonnet (under the bmw emblem). There stated the required amount of gas and oil for your air con system........no more.

sent my e46 ride to motoraire today for cooling coil replacement. according to the mechanic there now there is a shortage of aircon compressor for e46 in the market. i hope the compressor dont give way so soon.

Can any bro let me know the contact info of this Motoair ??? or Motoaire ?? or Motorair?? in Sin Ming?

My E46's aircon has just got its compressor replaced (S$1400) last Monday and last evening it started to blowing out hot air again. Contacted the mechanic and was told could be the coil problem. Guess what? The cost of replacing it may cost $1500. I was soooooooo frustrated. Luckily I found in this thread that CBS mentioned it only cost $900. This will save me $600 - imagine how many things I could do with this saving. Please Help !!!! Thanks in advance.

did mine a few weeks ago.. aircon leaking, hissing noise.. they put in some dye, then use special light and goggles to detect the leak. saw for myself with the special goggles.. siens.. 900bucks down the drain..

Hi,
Help needed for my E34 aircon.
Recently replaced the jammed compressor n dryer.
Mechanic qouted no more R12a gas available so top up with R134a gas.
But it leaks seriously within 1 month. Gone back to him 2 more times, to no avail.
Any one can recommend a good and reliable workshop besides this Motoaire @ Sin Min.

I have gotten a quote for $500 to change the aircon coil for my E36 318. I am getting it done today and it takes about 1 1/2 days job.

Just to share...

Last month, my A/C went kaput too. Sent to PML for replacement (under warranty) when it came out after 4 days (supposedly $3.5K bill) All was fine until 10 days later when coolant low light came on. The car started to overheat. When i stopped the car to inspect, could nt see anything on top. Filled up water and saw a stream flowing out under the car. Jacked up the car and mysteriously, found the drain plug was rolling around on the under tray... PML claims "it wasn't me"......and that it was not their doing....

Go figure.....

huh?? the coolant drain plug?? Then instantly your car would run out of water, not in 10 days, in like ten seconds. You sure no one tamper with it?

The drain plug is a locking plug that just requires 90degrees from open to lock. if you know me, no body touches my car without me being around (execpt for 2 occasions when i sent back to PML for warranty claims)

I suspect that it was not locked properly and after 10days of travelling, the plug worked itself loose and the pressure pushed out the plug.

Well, they are supposed to drain the coolant to get to the evaporator coil as the heater coil is built into the unit. Well lets just wait for the reply from PML.

His name is russell and he's 11 yrs old. Now damn lazy... only sleeps, eats, walks and shits... When you come home, he continues to lay down and opens 1 eyelid to look at you. He then closes it and goes back to sleep.

I just changed my aircon coil and the whole cost turned out to be $545 inclusive of GST. They had my passenger seat air con filter changed as well. I am driving a E36 318i. Many people are not aware that there is a second aircon filter located at the passenger seat.

Yes, it is a massive jog and takes about 1 1/2 day to change the aircon coil. You may want to contact Randy at 64897650 loacted at SengKang.
