Aircon question

My BMW 318 has 1 more year to go before scrap.

Aircon sometimes not cold when stationary on sunny day. When on the move the aircon is cold. Most of the times it's ok.

I was told must change the cooling coil abt $680.

Shld I just top up gas OR change the cooling coil?

Pls advise me. Tks!

just drive with windows down la.

Raining time, use portable fan

Left one year, no need to spend money..

I think topup gas is good enough since aircon is still cold most of the time.

Unless aircon is warm air only then change the cooling coil.

Most pple & the workshop says its cooling coil.

But I decided to topup aircon gas one time & monitor 1st.

Maybe fan issues. Or compressor / belt issues. Cooling coil dirty issues.

Gas pressure issues also possible (easiest to eliminate).

go for flushing.. it certainly helps and with the right diagnostic, it can determine if gas is over or below level. I used to had so much problem with aircon with my previous ride till i found a very good shop that rectified all the problem and most importantly save $$$. let me know if you need the address of the workshop. it's in Jurong though

Based on the description of the symptoms, i.e. warm when stationary, cool when moving, my guess it's unlikely to be the cooling coil, more likely the aircon compressor.

Ya lo, go buy those usb powered fans, I think really not worth to change,
Unless

Buy coil fix, before scrap change and scrap, sell cooling coil to some guy who got his coil leaked

$600+ is a good cost. Air conditioning is not just about cold or not cold.
If I am not wrong, if your cooling coil breaks down, still ok. But if it is the compressor, you probably get a damn bad smell....

And you probably want to think what you are breathing in.

Not an expert, but I have repaired air con for 3 cars previously and currently own.
