Hi all,
My ride is an e36 316i, issue is that my mech sez that my brake rotors are stuffed and the rear is affected as well.
:whythis:
Anyone here has done a transplant before??
What would be the stock parts involved and general costs?

since its an opportunity to switch to an upgrade, what do you recommend?

Hope that someone can advise as have a date with cabdriver on the 27th....
Or else, have to borrow granpa's honda to go to kallang

Cheers

Re: And Murphy Law Strikes My Brakes

If you don't have problems with the front calipers and rear drum function, go the any of the workshop listed on our resource page and have your rotor and pads replaced. Should set you back $450 there about... approximately 1/2 day job.

Those workshop can be found in the link below;

Re: And Murphy Law Strikes My Brakes

Hi guys,
On the topics of brakes..mine should be due for changing as according to last service report.
After reading forum postings about mod brakes..very tempting.
But advice given was that should I installed such, there will be "noises" when braking compared to stock.
I tend to get quite crazy on the roads sometime and I tot I should at least invest in good brakes but I definately don't want to end up sounding like a SBS Bus braking at stops. Very green with mods...any advices ? Thks.

Re: And Murphy Law Strikes My Brakes

See how the prognosis today...............I am actually confused...Brake rotors where got easy spoilt one????unless you run with no brake pad for 100000000000km right??
More or less needs some 'skimming' right to smoothen the grooves?
Jawzsg, you reckon its also an opportunity to upgrade the system?? any recommendations?

Re: And Murphy Law Strikes My Brakes

rotors are a service item, of course they wear out. You can skim them, but most likely they will be out of spec for thickness. If they are too thin, you could possibly pop the pistons from the calipers, not good.
Im sure for an E36 there would be several different replacememnt rotors available. Possibly even stock replacements that are slotted and/or drilled. Or, go the big brake package way, maybe $3-5k.
Just replace the stock rotors if funds are an issue, put a decent set of pads and your done, safe and happy.
Dont skimp on brakes

Re: And Murphy Law Strikes My Brakes

upgrade your rear drums to disc brakes...can contact propel for the parts.

like what Phil said..don't skimp on brakes

Re: And Murphy Law Strikes My Brakes

General I would applaud on both your concern of having good brakes.. The E36 is a good handling vehicle and even with the stock brakes, it is confidently sufficient for your daily needs. The BBK (Big Brake Kits) are more meant for the serious enthusiast especially in tracking activities.. other reasons is that look damnz bloody cool.

If you do not wish to go the extreme, aftermarket rotor are available e.g. Brembo slotted or Zimmermann Cross-drilled. Just remember to moderate your mod and keep the front and rear balance.. If you up the front, do up the rear... this is important for highly spirited driving.

After meddling with the brakes mod,, run the car in at moderately with added precaution for about a weeks or so and DO YOUR ALIGNMENT... also while at it, it's good to look brake pumps and hoses that they are not giving way soon and in good serviceable condition.

Re: And Murphy Law Strikes My Brakes

Cheers for that and also, read somewhere here that drilled rotors can cause cracks??
Yeah Will get the prognosis very soon and hope can make it to kallang on 27th..... else granpa have to do without their souped up honda in sunday.
Cheers all.

Re: And Murphy Law Strikes My Brakes

i read that yestersday too, but how do race cars use them then?

Re: And Murphy Law Strikes My Brakes

I don't know much about rotor manufacturing but the cracking issue I've heard are those who have attempted to drill their stock rotor to look cool way back. Possibly the rotor have undergone heat treatment and such to make them robust and also possibly the holes are done before that in the normal process.

On the front and back, there are also counter-sunk being done to the holes to lighten the friction impact by harder particles caught between the pad and disc. So all in all, the cross drilled or slotted rotor has gone through some serious engineering and application consideration.. hence, almost all Porky, Lambo etc etc are using them.

If you choose one from a reputatable manufacturer, I don't see this issue being a great concern. It does however, need suitable pads and also wear them out faster in exchange for the added efficiency.

Re: And Murphy Law Strikes My Brakes

i have slotted replacements on one of my cars, they were like 80 bucks each, took me about 45 minutes to replace them, new rotors, new pads and new bearings was about 250 bucks. they work great, plus i look cooler, if thats possible!!
