Before 3000, after 3300.

Working ????

Re: Another Maths question.

20% of x = y; where x = salary, and y = amount saved

Then, 20% of 1.1x = 60 + y

Where:

0.2x = y and 0.2(1.1x) = 60 + y,

Rearranging, we get:

0.2x(1.1) = 60 + y, and since 0.2x = y,

We end up with the end formula of:

1.1y = 60 + y

0.1y = 60

y = 600

And since 0.2x = 600,

x = 3000

Salary before increment (x) = $3000

Salary after increment (1.1x) = $3300

Still not enough to pay for future $800,000 3 room HDB flat :(

The working is provided on request for Horfun's son :)

excuse me, are you a tuituon teacher??

Re: Another Maths question.

shorter version

say x=earlier salary
new savings - earlier savings = $60
=> 20% of 110% of x - 20% of x = $60
=> 0.22x - 0.2x = $60
=> 0.02x = $60
=> x = $60/0.02 = $3,000

new salary = 110% of x = $3,300

Ans: (a) $3,000; (b) $3,300

My kid in Pri 3 :D

Re: Another Maths question.

That's why I say I'm glad I'm more than 1/2 way to meet my maker.... If that's what they are doing in P3, I sure fail PSLE!

Re: Another Maths question.

Why this question never factor in the deposit rate in saving bank and real rate of inflation?

What is his annualised return in 10 years if deposit rate is 1% constant and real inflation is 5%?

True, some of the maths questions are really tough for the kids but the textbooks and curriculum are certainly more interesting than what we get in the past.

Negative 3.3%?

Trick question right? Right answer is best not to park all of one's savings in bank deposits ;)
