Anyone encounter problem with propeller shaft coupling?

Hi all,

Has anyone replaced your propeller shaft coupling/mounting? If yes, what are the symptoms that you encounter?

Just recently, I encounter this "pop pop pop" sound when I try to move off from stationary. This sound is only heard if I stepped on the accelerator harder when moving off. And it seems to be from the front rather than rear of vehicle. If I step on the accelerator gently, the sound does not occur. (when I say gentle, it really means moving off like a tortoise).

There is no problem if I floor the accelerator while cruising. Sound only occurs when moving off from stationary.

Re: Anyone encounter problem with propeller shaft coupling?

U mean Propshaft coupling?

Could well be the centre bearing starting to go - but no guarantees.

Basically there is the fore and aft sections of a propshaft - one connected to the gearbox, and the other the diff. To allow some flex the 2 are joined by a cuffed spine - IE one section is free to slide inside the other and is fitted with a splined end.

Now that arrangement needs support to prevent it just dropping to the ground. A bearing is mounted inside a large rubber ring, and this is mounted on the propshaft. This is then supported by a metal semi-circle mounted to the chassis. The bearing rotates, the rubber cushions and the bracket supports.

If the bearing fails, the driveshaft will rotate and break the thin rubber section between the larger 2 rubber parts. Once this has gone the 2 rubber sections will vibrate against each other. The other problem is that because the propshaft now rotates less than straight there is a stress across the donut and its bolts - these in turn are then prown to failure.

if that's too cheem for you, then u need to go back to your workshop

I at first thought he wanted to know how to take out the stock propeller logo

Re: Anyone encounter problem with propeller shaft coupling?

BMW is replacing the twin-turbo engine with the twin turbine... from Rolls Royce.

Re: Anyone encounter problem with propeller shaft coupling?

Thanks for all the confusion. Bmwsg rawks!

Re: Anyone encounter problem with propeller shaft coupling?

Maybe the guibo is worn ..... The big rubber ring thing MW mentioned.

Re: Anyone encounter problem with propeller shaft coupling?

Thanks for the reply, especially MW n RBB.....

Will update once problem resolved, in the meanwhile if anyone has similar encounter, pls feel free to comment

Re: Anyone encounter problem with propeller shaft coupling?

steady, MW reply....I am in luv....

Re: Anyone encounter problem with propeller shaft coupling?

Update: Problem resolved

Items replaced: Prop shaft coupling, prop shaft centre bearing

No more sound from undercarriage when hard acceleration.
