Hi,

Does anyone here have the DIY guide to replacing the air filter for valvetronic N42 engine? The air filter is not as accessible as the M42 engine.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards.

Wa.... Siong job !!

Put it very easily....

1. Remove the top cover with the BMW logo on it

2. Remove the MAF that is attached to the Airbox

3.Unbolt the 2 screw near the strut tower that is holding down the airbox.

4. Turn the airbox upside down and remove the six screw.

5. Remove the 2 screw holding the MAF and the paper filter will come out...

Reverse the order for installing, noting that it's a real PITA to install the MAF back cos of the rubber gasket.

Work on a cold engine will be a better bet... :)

Have fun....

Hi Drift838,
If you r changing back to original filter, then let PML do better. Coz its not an easy task for first timer.
If changing to K&N, then you can try DIY. follow Piggy's steps. *Most headache part is when putting back the MAF together with the rubber gasket...

Do it when engine is cold !

Wah! Didn;t know so tough.
The BMW engineers should have made it easier, there should be no reason to make it so inaccessible given that it has to be changed regularly.

Perhaps should go for the GruppaM instead :)

I've heard that the oil from the K&N will cause some prob to the air mass sensor in the long run. Is this true? I did recall the idling going rough due to a sticky air mass sensor in my old car.

Any comments?

Thanks.

I changed to K&N for almost 3 years. No problem at all.
Not to worry !
GruppeM is a good stuff ;)

Hi,

GruppeM for Valvetronic looks cool in this post! I dropped the idea earlier to get it locally because of fitting problem. Original version tube didn't fit well with Valvetronic, but it seems to look OK in this post now after almost 6 months. It was something about 90 degrees rotation of mass air sensor, I think.

I'm still waiting for my set to arrive from UK in a couple of weeks. Hopefully, will be first one in Thailand to have it on N42 too. I've got pictures of DIY from Haynes BMW Manual on this Airbox - N42 (if you need).

Cheers,

Peter

I am thinking of just getting the cone K&N.

Would really appreciate the pics. But how can you send them to me?

Best regards.

You can drop your E-mail in this post and I'll scan the pix in during the weekend and sent to you, but what Piggyboz explained is almost the same like in the manual except no pix.

My first time to clean K&N E-2232 took about 15 minutes to get it off. Now it takes much less.

Rgds,

Peter
