I was using 5W-40 Castrol oil for 2,5 years. However, I'm switching to 10W-60 (Castrol TWS) tomorrow.
I have spoken to many people that know A LOT about engines and oil - from BMW's head of technical department to rally racers. For a turbo engine 10W-60 is way better as turbo engines produce much more heat than NA engines. I drive really hard, my oil temperature reaches 240-260F or even more quite often, even though I've got aftermarket oil cooler installed. That is why all of the people suggested to use 10W-60 - it handles high temperatures much better. 5W-40 loses it's lubricating characteristics when it gets really hot. 10W-60 doesn't.

Re: Anyone using this engine oil?

Dear bros... something I googled and found... search title is 10W60 for N54... apparently quite debatable for this issue... some drivers for the N54/55 tend to think 10w60 is better while others seem to disagree...

anyway I went to my workshop yesterday and they agree to drain out my 10w60 and replace with 5w40 FOC... but i didnt take on the offer in the end... the head mechanic previously from PML explained to me that PML has also been using 10w60 for the turbo engines and they found that this oil is more suitable for our climate which is hot summer all year round... he also mentioned that he has replaced quite a lot of cam shafts for the turbo N54 because the thinner oil burns out too fast...

He recommends 10w60 especially if car is heavily mod... exhaust...filter...dp..tuning chips etc... as the engine will be running very very hot...

Comments anybody?

Re: Anyone using this engine oil?

IMO instead of 60, u can go at 50 which is good enough for turbo engine and I don't think your oil temp will reach 240 unless u track.

Re: Anyone using this engine oil?

i tink the 10W-60 the 10W is for Winter. Correct me if I'm wrong. So y need to use so high since Singapore u know is all round summer with rains now and then??

Best is check with Castrol as they have specific engine oil for specific engine especially BMW engine. Even the engine cap has the word Castrol! Call them especially if your car is heavily modified.

I think in this part of the world we look at the other number which is 30, 40 or 60... this indicates the other end of the temperature...

The first number 0, 5 or 10W is to indicate the ambient cold temperature...

Correct me if i am wrong...

Re: Anyone using this engine oil?

The 10 or 5 or 0 doesn't matter, what ts is concern about is the thickness of the oil to protect the engine

Bro Samlambo... what is your take on 10w60 oil? I am very confused la... Can you find out from your contacts or techs what is their opinions on the type of oil to use?

How about you? What oil will you be using? Actually the other day I met a bro who drives a X5 35i...same N55 engine... and he has jus brought his ride to PML for service and they used Shell Helix for his car... How come not Castrol?

Re: Anyone using this engine oil?

No need ask here ask there. Refer to ur owner manual.

Re: Anyone using this engine oil?

I personally thanks 60 is ok for turbo engine. As Im using castrol magnatec 40 on my bmw 630 and feels as good as ows previously. If u feels 60 oil is great on ur car and engine temperature is at its normal situation. Then it should b gd.

Cheers

Re: Anyone using this engine oil?

for turbo cars , I think thicker oil is better as engine gets hot very fast. When engine gets hot the oil becomes softer. For my 535 when i change to 5w30 oil my car lost power.
