I can safely say there are at least 20+ E90 installed with E60 M5 gearknobs & most of them done at SWC - Mike's place.

The 3er is running a customised interior with the M knob, also wrapped in new leather. Totally pimped out ride. Therfore, the verdict, CAN BE DONE. The chrome ring kinda resembles the one on the e46 M3 CSL....

To begin with, the cosole for the gear selector looks like a direct transfer over from the M5/6. So as long as the shape fits your 3er gear console area (after the stock one has been removed), I'm sure it's a definite possibility. No need to even worry about silly chrome rings, just use the entire unit from the M.
