Auto Oil Pan, Auto Transmission Fliud and Adaptor Changed

I would like to share on my experience on Auto Oil Change. I have never experienced it on any of my previous ride.

During an routine servicing of my E90 when my car was hoisted. As usual, the mechanic checked for any abnormalities.
I was shown that grease "gathered" along the auto oil pan and the nuts and was told it was time to change.
Of course, I also seek second opinion and do my own research. It was confirmed that it should be changed every 40K-50K km.
Having the thoughts that I just got my ride 5 months ago and not sure when was the last time the previous owner has done it. I decided to change it. Total down time around 2 hours.

Pictures below show the affected parts, parts required.

Picture shows grease along the nuts and pan.

Auto Transmission Fluid (7 Litres Required). It will be poured into the pan via a machine which I don't know what it is called.

Did all 7 liters went ?

Bro, I was told 7 litres is required. I bought 7 litres and saw the mechanic poured all into the machine. However, I am not sure if the 7 litres is pumped into my car. I assumed it will.

I suspect if all go inside ..... Overfilled.

agree w/u 110%.
from my memory tranny fluid in both torque converter+oil pan = 8lts.
by draining jus pan it should be 5.5lts.
balance sits in torque converter.

Thanks Bro, I am not sure how much went in but I saw them empty 7 bottles into the machine. Maybe I shall check with the ws.

Re: Auto Oil Pan, Auto Transmission Fliud and Adaptor Changed

I cant remember the actual amount required. But am sure the correct way to do it is:
After installing new pan,
pump in oil till it overflow a little.
(Yes, in inlet is the same as the outlet.)
tighten the drain nut.
Hoist down car.
Start engine, brakes on, engage thru all gears, PRND. Each gear for a couple seconds.
Stop engine.
Hoist up car,
release drain nut, if it still overflows, it ok. If dont, pump in more oil till it reaches the brims.
Reaching the outlet brim is the correct level.

My car was hoisted up all the way throughout the whole process. After the fluid was pumped into, they used a ladder to climb up and
start the engine. They let it run for 15 mins before it was hoisted down for 1 round of ride.

Re: Auto Oil Pan, Auto Transmission Fliud and Adaptor Changed

IIRC, according to the manual, the engine must be running after you have refilled.

After you have filled the atf till it seeps out, then start engine, shift through the shifter
With engine still running, fill atf till it overflows
Then tighten the plug. Then you can cut engine.

If the atf is above a certain temperature, need to cut engine and let it cool before you repeat above...think it is 40 or 50c...

Wanted to DIY, but it seemed complicated to me...so...

Bros,
I have checked with the ws that they have used 6.5 litres of the fluid. That amount has been used due to change in oil pan.

Re: Auto Oil Pan, Auto Transmission Fliud and Adaptor Changed

Thank you for the information. Great to know there's hope instead of spending $9-10k on a new gearbox!
