BMW 125i (E82) - Is it possible to "remap" to 130ispecs

Hi newbie here, I am keen to purchase the 125i and understand it is actually a detuned 3 litre engine sharing with the 130i which churns out almost 280hp.

Million $ question is whether it is possible (and I am sure it is) to "un-detune" the 125i engine to reinstate its potential power to that of a 130i. Anyone done it and how is recommended to do this job?

Thanks!

The info is available on US forums. This only applies to the 3 litre N52 engines. They were fitted with a different intake system. Parts apparently are interchangeable but would require reflash of ECU to bring it up to 130i/330i levels. Yes, there is about 50bhp difference in it, more than enough to be noticeable.

Thanks for the info. Forgive me if I sound clueless. Is the 125i here the 3 litre N52 engine? If so, has anyone interchanged the parts and done the reflash to bring it up to the 130i level? Or any workshop who can do it?

If not wrong, it is the 2.5 liter N54/55 engine.

Hi, actually it's a 3 litre engine confirmed.

I thought there is a powerbox for that purpose.

Yes, power box is a popular and effective item. But it would not compensate for the hardware differences between the two. Having said that, it's a good thing for any N52.

According to realoem, intake manifold, exhaust manifold & intake airbox is the same for both E82 125 & E87 130.

Apparently N52 3 litre fitted to 125/130/330 comes in several versions. Some are missing hardware needed in conjunction with the ECU to make 50bhp more, which is the three stage flapper valve and the motor to drive it. I did find that REALOEM not always accurate...though its pretty good.

Hi, so is this power box thing sufficient or do you need to change the hardware too? Where to get the power box?

Perhaps Boss .........

If you like the shape of the 125i coupe, but want more power, perhaps consider the 135i. if not, just go for the 130i hatch.

Re: BMW 125i (E82) - Is it possible to "remap" to 130ispecs

T6 has a point. Save on the mods but upgrade instead!

The subjective acceleration difference I compared driving these cars suggests between the 130i and 135i is marked, that of 125i to 130i almost as marked, and for perspective, the 335i is somewhere between the 130i and the 135i, the Scirocco R almost 335i levels, and none of these differences comes anywhere close to that between 135i vs GTR. Traction wise, of course GTR best and Scirocco needs most care. Handling wise GTR tops, but 130i is beautifully balanced. Oh yes, one more...Audi A5 2 litre turbo, which on GTech was the least accelerative here but what a beautiful car. So to put all this in a blender and what one might end up with would be the Evo X, or its more expensive but (only) slightly slower 4wd rival S3 DSG. However, there are many more other reasons to like a car than these...

Thanks for the enlightenment.

In short, E82 125 don't have E81/87 130 3 stage DISA.

E81/87 130 is my next aim next yr.

Go for it! I am having a ball with mine. Met up with several 130i forumers who also share the same view. It is a very balanced package. And its not so IKEA challenged when you need to carry home improvement materials...but for similar price do also consider the Evo X or S3.

Hi guys, got my 125i, installed the Powerbox and feel that if more could be done, it would be great. Any suggestions on mods which would improve the performance? One thing I noticed is the car is not very"free spooling". What I mean is when you accerlerate and release the accerlator, the "engine brake" is very strong and slows the car down. I am not sure if anyone knows what I mean or experienced this in your 1 series.

This is what you need ...

ARMA - BMW Supercharger

What I mean is when you accerlerate and release the accerlator, the "engine brake" is very strong and slows the car down. I am not sure if anyone knows what I mean or experienced this in your 1 series.
Did not notice this, except in "manual" mode. But it keeps the rev up which is good if you need to step on it again.

Congrats on a great car!

For my 125i, I changed to the "BMW Performance" CF intake system, exhaust and brake set. Noticed a more straight line power delivery and stronger pull after 4000 rpm. Nice add on & understated. If you are to buy the brake set, get the rear painted 1st! I am learning it the hard way :)

Cheers and enjoy the ride
