Re: BMW "5-series GT" Concept Revealed!!!
if the only bad publicity is no publicity and the time to start worrying is when people stop criticizing you, Bangle has nothing to fear. Web sites have sprung up expressly devoted to having him stripped of his job, not to mention his health, hearth, and home. These are the handiwork of intensely devoted BMW brand advocates, worshippers of BMW's clean, athletic lines who don't think much of where Bangle was taking BMW design since Wolfgang Reitzle's exit.
As a reflection, or perhaps a validation of what Bangle is after in car design, Bangle referred to an exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City, titled, "Skin." The exhibit includes examples from Swatch's "Skin" collection, which feature watches that have translucent bands and faces to show the inner mechanism as well as the wearer's own skin. There's a handbag that allows nylon threads to emerge across the surface of the fabric. Says the show's catalog, like hair "longer than human body hairs and more sparse than animal fur, the strands of thread invoke the skin of an anomalous being." Indeed, the effect created is that the handbag is hairy. A fabric pattern called crease optically creates the illusion of wrinkles on the material, anafroant to those who want to see only ironed material. Finally there were women wearing blouses with an image of a naked body on the fabric, making the fully clothed woman appear naked. The curators declared, "Skin, the complex membrane that holds the body together, also embraces the full spectrum of design today-from product to architecture, fashion, and media."
Said Bangle, talking about the Z4 surfaces, "Is a beautiful woman less beautiful because she is wearing a beautiful set of clothes?"
