BMW 7 Series - Battery Replaced to Amaron Pro 100AH 900CCA $190

Just changed to an Amaron Pro 100AH 900CCA battery yesterday at Eunos for $190.

My previous battery was an AcDelco 100AH 820CCA that only lasted 2yrs7mths. While the voltage was still reading 12.4 to 13V with engine off. The CCA reading fell to between 280 (measurement taken at the engine bay) to 450CCA (measurement taken at the boot, battery terminals).

Cranking motor sounded weak and slow in rotating when I had hazard lights flashing and headlights on, or if I left the keys in for too long before starting (example 15-20 minutes). The battery most probably could have lasted another 6mths but too risky. At first I thought it was time to change the starter motor as recommended by mechanic during my last service.

Now with new battery, the starter motor appears to be rotating 3X-4X faster.

Batteries in BMW, especially 100AH batteries suppose to last 4-6 years, I am wondering if the early or premature weakening could be due to the previous owner of the car not registering the battery, or if ACDelco makes lousy batteries!!

Do you "reset" your car after changing the battery? I am having this "recharge battery" issue....

If you mean registering the battery, no i have not done so. I know this can be done in JB for around 30ringgit or less.

If after you changed to a new battery and you have the battery warning light to recharge battery or weak battery, the most probable problem is your alternator.

Yeah, I meant register the battery. No, I just got this ride and it just shows "recharge battery" after I fiddle with the electronics for a while...not sure it is recharge the key fob battery or car battery....

1. I get that too whenever I leave the CarFob in the ignition for more than 2-3 minutes.

2. Anything more than 10-15 minutes, if I don't eject the key (engine off), car won't be able to start.

3. Thus, that's the reason I bought a new battery.

4. After changing the car battery, things are much better. Can leave my keys in the ignition for 10minutes, no problem.

5. I suggest you get your battery tested.

6. Measure it from the rear boot where the battery sits.

7. If the reading there is around 500-600CCA or below, your battery is weak and due for change. If measurement taken from the engine bay, 400-500CCA means your battery is weak.

8. When battery is new, although rated at 900CCA, a new or good battery will show 1100CCA to 1200CCA.

9. If your battery is under warranty, anything between 60%-70% of its rated CCA, you can actually claim on the warranty.

Tks bro., i will prob send my ride for a checkup next fortnight and do it once and for all.
I just got this, a 9/06 730li and planned to ride it out for 1.5 odd years. Prob changing the tires, battery (if need be) and 1good servicing.:)

Congrats. I bought my E66 7-Series last year 2014 Jan, with 4 years left till Jan2008.

I bought the car because the annual depreciation of $12K a year was too awesome to pass up.

I am also due for tire change. Have been shopping around for the last 6months for tires as mine wore out on the edges (BMW 7 series normal symptom). Maybe can buy together to squeeze for a better deal.

Thus far, I managed to get $195 per piece for Yokohama Advanc DB V551 + $25 installation per piece.

For battery, you can check in Autobacs for free, but please don't but it there. They are overpriced!!

Thanks. I was tempted by the "low" depreciation as well and tot i can risk the higher costs of maintaining it.

Tires - was quoted -
$230 for "Dunlop" - dunno which model from the famous AMK joint.
$220 for Toyo c1s - paya lebar
Rm320 for a Vietnam tire - not sure which brand but size is 235/50R18. Damm tempting...

Battery
I checked the hidden menu, it shows 12085mv. Ok?

Wow how did you get to the hidden menu? I tried adding the chassis number or something but it didn't unlock the hidden menu.

For car batteries, reading the voltage doesnt tell as much as reading the CCA.

When I changed my battery, my voltage was reading anywhere from 12.2V to 13V depending on how long ago I turned off my engine and how long i have my key fob in.

In general, the voltage should read between 12.4V to 13V when your engine is off. With engine on and car idling the voltage should read 13.5V to 14.5V.

Mine currently with new battery is reading between 12.4 to 13V with engine off and 14V to 14.2V with engine running.

The reason CCA reading is more important is because it reads the capacity of the battery. Capacity means remaining life! Think of it like horsepower cum remaining fuel in the fuel tank. The lower the CCA, the lower the horsepower of your battery and duration it will last or its ability to hold a stable voltage.

Each battery has a number of metal plates inside, the CCA measures the health of those plates. Even if half your plates are damaged, the voltage reading can still read as normal.

For checking the health of battery using Voltage only, its normally checked under stress.. Meaning with headlights on and engine off. It should read above 12.4V. The second method is starting the car, during the cranking stage, voltage should not drop below 11.9V

Oh by the way, tyre size is 245/50/18. You can't use 235.

Bro,

goto youtube diye65e66.com..they have detailed instructions on how to access the hidden menu.
u need to unlock the menu first - though.

where did you change your battery for $190? Looks like I gotta go change the battery liao...:(

re the tyres, yeah - the fella was trying to convince me that 235 vs 245 is "ok lah"...but i don't know whats the adverse effect..

I just asked another tyre shop @ tan boon liat - Dunlop GT Maxx (Japan) - $240.
these are all NON-RFT though.

I am still trying to assess whether I really need to change - my ride still has 17 months left....

Bro,

Care to share where you got the yokohama tyres and battery?
$190+25 is cheap.

I am toying to change to goodyear but the soft tire wall is not convincing.
