Brake dust on front wheels but not rear wheels

Hi bros! I have sent my car F10 535 for servicing Nov 2013 and was advised by SA that my brakes pads and discs have worn and is advisable to change. Heeded the advise and gave them to green light to do so. However, after collecting the car, i realized that the brake dusts now only covers the front wheels. Rear wheels are completely clean of brake dusts.

Before changing of the brake pads/discs, all 4 wheels will be covered in brake dusts. Have arranged an appointment with PML after CNY and see what they say.

Any idea what is going on? Rear brake pads not "eating" onto the brake disc?

IMHO, there is nothing wrong.

In fact when all the brakes are working properly, the front wheels will have more brake dust over the rear wheels. If u don't wash in a week or two, u will realise the rear wheel will also have brake dust collected, it just has much less dust compared to the front wheel. Primary braking power is from the front.

FYI:
1) Footbrake - While all 4 brakes are working, the primary braking power comes from the front. I do not know how to put it clearly, maybe the simplified version provides an understanding...

Simplified version = 100% pressure on the footbrake, front brakes squeezes with 70-80% while rear brake squeeze with 20-30%. Regardless of FWD, RWD or AWD.

LOL, this is just for broad simplied explanation and it is not meant to be taken techinically e.g. the percentage distribution.

2) Handbrake - Rear brakes r operational, front brakes not involved.

The above is also why ALL vehicles has their front brakes 'bigger' than the rear thus the varied combinations of e.g. 4pot F and basic R, 4pot F and 2pot R, 6pot F and 2pot R, 6pot F and 4pot R, 8pot F and 4pot R or 8pot F and 6pot R.
Seldom or super rarely u will see brake configuration of 6pot F and R.

from e90 to f10 ... everytime is front wheel orh orh liao due to brake dust rear wheel still looks ok

My front brake pads can last for more than 100k (can last until scrap) while my rear brake pads have been replaced after 40k.

if i m not wrong, the total mileage 'usable' of e new brake pad for front and rear differs, more and less kilometers respectively.

For F10, there has been quite a few discussions on why the rear seems to have more dust than the front. One theory is that it's due to the auto hold function but I think the jury is still out there on this. I also see more brake dust on my rears than the fronts, before and after I changed to BBK. The suggestion was to change to lower brake dust pads like EBC.

but TS' query seems interesting as he says rears are clean! I also wan!!

My F10's front wheels with more dust than rear. Even my previous F10 was also same.

U can check via the obc to see how many mileage* left on the brake-pad... * mileage not equal to travelling mileage but is e mileage where brakes r 'operational'.

Physical inspection is the sure way to know if its time to change ...... The CBS if properly set can be a reminder but if it's not properly set can just be a PITA on the idrive or dash.

Agree.
Newbies will again asked how to do physical inspection or how thick/thin e pad had to be before its considered time to change.

I was told before but my cache memory got flushed, nothing there now for me to recall

I dont drive with auto H function. Mine is always turn off. But it still makes me curious as to why are both of my rear wheels completely free of brake dust when before changing of brake pads & discs on all 4 wheels, brake dusts accumulates evenly on all 4 wheels..

Just send car in for polishing today now all 4 wheels shiny as mirror when the brake dusts accumulates again, shall upload some pictures for you guys to see exactly how "completely free of brake dust" is on my rear wheels as compared to my front wheels

Abnertan, changed it at PML and the damage was $2k+ for all 4 brake pads and discs.

It could be simply that bmw has improved the rear brake pads - in terms of dust.

Mine on stock pad. Equally much brake dust on front and rear.

Brake pad thickness can check by eye. Just squat down and can see the remaining brake pad thickness liao.

As with other f10, my rear is left with little after 20k km. Front still gao gao.

Quite surprised that TS has to change both front and rear at the same time.

I don't use auto hold.

Stock pads are the worst. I rem how I used to have to scrub my hyper silver rims every 1-2 days due to brake dust accumulation.
