Brake Squealing

i have just lowered my ride on my 320i using vogtland coilovers and i must say the ride now is more agile and the change of direction is very slick. i upgraded my rotors to cross-drilled zimmerman and changed my brake pads to PBR. callipers are still stock. braking is abt 20-25% better than stock now. but why is it that when i tap the brake very lightly a high pitched squeal is generated. i feel so paiseh stopping at traffic light now. this only happens at extremely low speeds when u are coming to a complete stop after slowing down or when u are slowing down to a slow speed during humps.anyone ever got this problem ? the workshop where i did said that the material is too hard for the rotors. but the said its good cause ur braking will be efficient. but the sound very irritating. anyone ever gone thru this ? could it be brake lining as well?

Thanks Mates.

oh really..guess i am not the only one on the lonely island. i dun have any sound on hard braking but when coming to a stop, there is especially when its hot. i have found out a way to eliminate it by adding shims to the brake pads. it costs 100 bucks but it wil defintely eliminate 80-90% of the sound. from what i have found out, it appears the zimmerman rotors are one hard strong s.o.b. :shoot:

Hi

How much u paid for the zimmerman rotors?
Me looking forward to change my rotors, sum say DBA rotors are affordable.

i paid 800 for all 4 zimmerman rotors and PBR brake pads. the zimmerman rotots are very well built and hard. thats y i guess brake pads being hard as well will ahve squealing sounds on it.

Hi humanfly,

I'm having the same problem. After changing to aftermarket street pads, I'm getting very consistent (& loud) squealing.

The squeal is especially obvious after warm up (3 of them squeal in different frequencies!)..

Had the brakes assessed and it was attributed to the harder pads which are however much better performing than stock. Was advised by Autobacs workshop that adding rubber shimmers to the brakes could help. But in my case, the pads already come with dampening shimmers.

Since it's mostly my rears that are squealing (80% of the time), I may consider changing the rear pads to softer ones.. Do check out whether it's fronts or rears that are squealing. Also, in some cases, the squealing does go away after usage??

Cheers,
Alvin.

usually hi temp pads squeal... had hi-temp pads installed for track use and that squealed like a bus, thereafter i change em back to the lower temp pads, now i am running those with no sound at all... :)

hey geoff ang, u live near meyer road is it?
i saw u in ur z4 yesterday if i was u. u were over taking near the bend and turn left into a house. was that u bro?

Unfortunately, this is quite common. I don't think that anyone is THAT lucky to have a bimmer that doesn't squeal... My stock brake pads doesn't squeal until I changed to aftermarket ones and those squeal once in a while. After a while, I don't notice them at all... All "part and parcel" of having a bimmer i guess!! :screwedu:

i am gonna attach shims to my brake pads to cut the noise. imagine stopping at a traffic light at orchard. sibei malu man. ppl look at u like one kind. havent try yet but sure ppl can notice. knn...

Shouldn't squealing be attributed to improper installation of the brake pads?

Well, there are a few reasons why they squeal... improper installation, pad hardness etc...

Humanfly, at least u managed to get pple to look at your car when it squeals mah!!

i very particular on anything i install..abit something wrrong i must check..and geoff ang, i saw u after eurasian association..i wanted to zoom past u but u turn left into a house. :naughty: damn..perhaps another time?
