Brakes

Hi All,

i'm not sure how to describe this but lately, I noticed that the brake pedal is very hard to depress when I try to start the engine in the morning or after the car has not been used for more than 8 hours. It feels as though someone depressed the pedal a couple of times until the pressure becomes very strong.:whythis: Is this normal? Do you think it has something to do with my brake fluid or something? Other than that, normal braking seems fine. My ride is a E90 320 approx 19,000 km mileage and 17mths old.

Thanks in advance for any help.

regards,
jooggie

Re: Brakes

Send your car into PML, you may have a slight leak in the vacuum pump system in your car. When the engine is running, the pump is able to overcome the losses. Probably not a big thing. Usually it is a check valve in the vacuum hose leading from your brake booster.

Cheers

Re: Brakes

Thanks for the reply. This was what my SA told me as well. Will have to leave my car with them overnight to monitor.

Re: Brakes

Most of us do find the brake pedal harder to depress than the accelerator.. hmmm...:yummie:

Re: Brakes

Hi ABD,

No, I have not sent in my car yet... waiting for my CSA to provide replacement vehicle, as she wants me to leave my car at the workshop overnight for observation. Think it's gonna be a while before I get the car since I drive the cheapest model...

thanks,
jooggie

Re: Brakes

Actually it got nothing to do with your brakes. Its the engine. See, when the engine is cold, it'll try to get it up to its 'optimum operating temp' ASAP so as it complies to some EU jargong stuff. And the engine does that by running higher revs when its cold, which is why you say anything more than 8 hours. Therefore, when you need to brake, and when the engine wants to rev higher, you get that kind of feeling that your brakes are not effective. The thing is, I think its normal. Try to put to Neutral when cruiseing and apply the brakes when you just start up say in the morning. I believe its just as effective. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Brakes

you're really lucky to get a replacement car from your CSA..can you please share how you got him to get you one?? thanks!

Re: Brakes

I learned thru this forum that such services (replacement vehicle) is available so i just asked for it... so i guess as you mentioned 'i'm lucky', coz i drive the lowest model.

I am experiencing the same problem too. How was yours? Fix liao?

My E90 320 also facing this problem recently.

Also around 17k mileage! Sighz, especially cold days! Has anyone gotten any official reply from PML about this issue? Morning is super difficult to depress the pedal to start the car.

Re: Brakes

well whatever it is your CSA is quite good to make such arrangements for you! i recommend you leave the car with them just in case it's a safety issue..and since you have a replacement car you dont need to rush them

Re: Brakes

I felt the same too. Normally in the morning, the brake pedal is very hard to press down but I never had problem in starting up the car.
Normally I just gave a foot tap (just a light tap) to the brake pedal and start the car.

I thought this was normal? On my previous ride, after you switch off your engine, if you kept tapping on the brake, it will become harder and harder to depress.

Re: Brakes

Just an update. My brake problem went away a few days before I sent my car in for servicing a few weeks back. PML changed my brake fluid. However, the problem came back again recently. So I called my CSA just now and she informed me that there is currently no solution available. Even if they replaced the brake booster, the problem would still recur. They're waiting for Germany to revert. I wonder how long will they take to resolve it... She also told me that several E90 have the same issue.

several E90 ..... that includes me lah :furious:

i have the exact same problem. Left my car at PML for a day and was told no problem detected! At least yours is honest enough to tell you no solution for the time being.

Re: Brakes

tks jooggie for the update, otherwise i would not know what went wrong since did not manage to see this thread when i did the search...i suppose my car had some initial signs alr yest morn...

Re: Brakes

just to add that this 'brake resistance' happened again this morning...it was only about 24hrs ago that i last left my car...looks like she needed to be woken up every day for her dosage of fuel...

Re: Brakes

Can somebody clarify with the service exec what the problem is? Before anyone says `no solution yet' they surely know the problem in order to give an answer like that.

Can you find out in detail? I hate brake issues, and being a prospective buyer, this is THE worrying issue to me. Stinks of a vacuum leak.

24hrs is pretty good already. for me in between reaching office and going home my peddle already become hard to press, and that's only 10+ hrs... not to mention most mornings when my car has only been idle from the previous night for that same duration or less...

i spoke to my CSA just now and confirmed that there is still no solution. i tried to get a more detailed explanation of it and she said that it had something to do with the spring in the brake booster... didn't really get what she was trying to say. anyway, she mentioned that it could be 2 to 3 months before Germany can solve the problem. Also, this problem is confined to the E90 series only. so if you're looking at another model, then this should not be an inherent problem to whatever ride you're getting.

maybe all the bros who's rides are suffering from this problem should bug their CSA, so there'll be a greater urgency to find a solution.
