cables to headlights cracked/worn out

hi guys, recently my '06 E90's low beam bulb blew, so i decided to transfer over my high beam bulb to low beam, however after doing that, the indicator for blown pole light came on... upon inspecting the pole light, it was not blown and it would light up occasionally when i "disturb" the wires inside, and sometimes even my high beam would flash for a moment.

this made me realize that the wires near to the connectors were all naked inside and touching each other causing some sort of electrical short!!!! now both my pole light and high beam would not light up... :( anyone else encountered this problem? inspection is coming and i cant really go for inspection with a high beam that isn't working..

Re: cables to headlights cracked/worn out

me too. high beam right is not working. cables inside are all cracked and naked. there's not enough allowance to work on those wires. workshop says change out the headlight is an option as usual.

Re: cables to headlights cracked/worn out

That is pretty ridiculous, actually seems like this is a pretty common problem, design fault? Wonder if anyone highlighted this to pml...

Re: cables to headlights cracked/worn out

yes..this frigging age old problem.. all wire insulator turn biscuit after 3 to 4 years of heating and baking...
some workshops charge couple of hundred bucks to re-sleeve those wires.. well it is still cheaper than changing the whole frigging head lite.
BMW AG- wtf!!

Re: cables to headlights cracked/worn out

Didntt you notice BMW always test their car's reliability in cold countries.....Its proven BMW cannot will not last 3 years in this part of the world without parts failures due to heat..

Re: cables to headlights cracked/worn out

Why not try to take out the headlamp unit and re-do the wirings instead of changing the whole headlamp which will cost lots of money..

For E60, I should be quite confident in doing it...but e90 honestly am not too sure yet...

need to do more research on them..=)

Re: cables to headlights cracked/worn out

Wah got so jialat anot, sighs, one more thing to do on my maintenance list......

Re: cables to headlights cracked/worn out

I actually used insulating tape to go round the exposed wires and also taped certain wires together to restrict their movement. So far so good. Insulating tape does have a relatively high melting point so should not have a problem.

Re: cables to headlights cracked/worn out

my personal observation from doing all the H8s on the headlights is that they use crappy rubber insulation for the wires.
turns brittle after 1-2 years and not much we can do abt it unless open it up to redo the insulation
