changing engine oil

Hi guys

Am hoping some of you might be able to help me with a question (or two).

I'm aware that quite a few people here get their car's engine oil changed between services at PML. Is there any problem switching between eg: Mobil and Castrol (which I believe, PML uses?) as long as you stay at the same weight oil?

Also, the manual recommends 0w oil? Is there a reason we should use a 5w oil instead? I'm a little concerned if this would have any effect on the engine when it heads into PML and gets a new batch of 0w oil.

Thanks

Re: changing engine oil

Have been on Mobil1 SuperSync in between PML's Castrol.

No issues at all.

Mine's a 2.0L Valvetronic.

6-potter owners,

Please comment....

Cheers!

Re: changing engine oil

Also been alternating between PML's Castrol Longlife, and Mobil1 SuperSyn in between, stayed with recommendation of 0W-30. Have also tried Torco SR. Very smooth too.

Re: changing engine oil

i've been on Mobil 1 too..5w50 i think..am thinking of trying out either Royal Purple or Torco...perhaps in a thinner weight...0W40?.. what do u guys reckon? i'm hesitant to try 30w oils..might be too thin for my ancient engine! ('92 M40 E36!)..thanx for any advice!..

btw.. what oil should i use for the final drive pls? where s a good place to procure it too?..thanx a bunch!..:)

cheers!

Re: changing engine oil

I was advised today by a workshop mechanic to change my engine oil when the dashboard reads 12500 to next service.
He said normally 25000 is recommended by BMW but Singapore being a tropical country, it is recommended to change twice in 25k.

Is it true? Pls advise

Re: changing engine oil

Hrm.....depends on your preference lar. If you sayang your Beemer more, then change engine oil more often lor. At the moment, I am changing the engine oil every 3k-4k km. Might have to decrease the frequency though since petrol prices and slowly but surely inching towards the heavens. Sigh.

0w-40 Mobil 1 SuperSync Gold in 6potters...very smooth engine :)
I m using it

Re: changing engine oil

No prob in switching. I've been running on OW-40 Mobil 1 Supersync Gold before switching to Torco & for me I'll throw oil between 5 to 8k km.

Re: changing engine oil

Hes not wrong by the books. IMO, 10k km is abt right to change, no point maxing it out. Healtier for the engine & better response after.

Re: changing engine oil

So where is the best place (or at least highly recommended) to do any engine oil change? BVO? And how much would it cost (oil + labour) assuming using Mobil one? For a 325Ci.

Re: changing engine oil

i did mine at autobacs. $10 for labour because i brought my own oil, think its less if you buy oil from them. other places i called quoted around the region of $30.

Re: changing engine oil

Engine oil change at BVO labour is $15 or $20 with changing the filter... done on the spot :)

Re: changing engine oil

me using the torco 10-40 now...smooth...but a freind urging me to dry the motul double ester...says gtee nirvana...anyone tried?

Re: changing engine oil

Would anyone be able to tell me what is the recommended engine oil grade for my 318i's valvetronic engine? Sorry if this is obvious to people, but I could not find any reference to this in the user manual. Wld like to change engine oil in between visits to PML. Thanks.

BMW Long Life 0W-40 ... think BMW recommends Castrol RS 0W-40 ...

Re: changing engine oil

I just changed to Mobil 5W-50 last weekend. I used Mobil 0W-40 and PML Castrol 5W-50 in my last 2 oil changes.. To me.. MObil 5W-50 is shiok...

:)

FYI - I also changed plugs so maybe that's why my 320 is pulling away nicely when I rev it... JMHO :)
